Citizen Input. None. 2. Consider approval of the minutes of the February 23, 2012 Regular Session. Member Rodriguez-Terrell moved to approve the minutes as presented. Member Krueger seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. 3. Reports and discussion regarding Library Board goals and projects for 2012: a. National library legislative issues. Vice-Chair Rushing reported that he had reviewed the appropriations letter and called the appropriate elected officials to express his views. b. TCPL events and TCPL public relations activities. Member Rodriguez-Terrell congratulated all efforts made on behalf of the 30th Anniversary Celebration and reported that she and her daughters particularly enjoyed the magician Diamond Jim. Chair Gehrke and Member Krueger served on the planning committee for the 30th Anniversary Celebration activities. c. Library visits. Member Krueger reported on her recent visit to the Denton Library - North Branch; showed pictures of the facility and distributed information entitled History of the Denton Public Library. She reported that the 32,801 square foot North Branch facility is housed in a remodeled Food Lion grocery store. Features include a cafe; three meetings rooms; adult lab; computer access rooms; a teen area with computers, games and lounges; a book sale area; seating throughout; and computer workstations for the visually impaired; drive up service window; self checkout stations; and 13 public access computers available for 60 minute sessions, and two express stations available for 15 minute sessions. The staff is comprised of six full-time and two part-time circulation clerks, five reference personnel, a manager, assistant, two full-time and one part-time library assistants, and five technical service staffers, two of which are librarians. 4. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities: a. Library volunteer recognition luncheon. The luncheon was held at Amore Pizza and Pasta on February 25t". Pat Holmes and Diana Kruzich were presented awards for 30 years of service; Joe Kruzich for Library Board 03-22-2012 Page 2 10 years of service; and Alyce Rufi and Sana Sulaiman for five years of service each. Andrea Paterson was named the James W. Althaus Volunteer of the Year. b. National Library Week puppet show. FOTCPL PRESENTS! The Road to Uwungalema will be performed by S&D Puppetry's Sandra McLean and Sandy Shrout in the Multipurpose Room at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10tH c. Chalk This Way booth. The Saturday, March 24t" event is sponsored by Lakeside Arts Foundation. This chalk art festival will include presentation of three scholarship awards, an anime contest, videos, face painters, and stiltwalkers. FOTCPL will share a booth with The Colony Playhouse at a cost of $12.50. FOTCPL member volunteers will staff the booth. d. Annual membership meeting. The event will be held Saturday, April 28t" at 6:30 p.m. and will include a 7 p.m. business meeting with election of officers followed by fun night activities. Electronic Resources Librarian Cary Cox is developing a survey soliciting ideas from the membership for games/activities for the event; the link for the survey will be emailed to the membership. 5. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items: a. Public Relations Events and programs: i. Stewart`s Creek Elementary School Celebrity Reading Day. On March 8t", Youth Services Librarian Jean Snyder and Youth Services Library Assistant Tina Martinez were "celebrity readers" for four classes of preschool students. ii. 4t" Annual Great Magazine Swap. Chair Gehrke assisted with this March 3rd event in her role as an FOTCPL officer. Tables were set up in the front lobby where participants could drop off magazines and select from those donated by other participants; donation of magazines was not required to take magazines. The few items remaining at day-end were recycled. iii. Theatre Slam. The "play in a day" event is scheduled for Saturday, March 31St in collaboration with TCPL's Teen Writers' Club and The Colony Playhouse. Electronic Resources Librarian Cary Cox will be the TCPL liaison on the day of the event, as Director Sveinsson will be at the City Council retreat that day. Three short skits written by the Teen Writers' Club will be casted and rehearsed during the day, with a public performance in the Multipurpose Room at 4 p.m. The registration fee for participation is $10; forms are available at the Circulation Desk to be mailed by the participant to The Colony Playhouse. Participants must provide their own lunch. Tickets for the performance will be by a suggested donation of $2.00. b. Grants: L Texas Book Festival Grant applications. The Texas Book Festival is held in Austin each year; part of the proceeds fund grants for public libraries. TCPL has applied for $1,884 for a Literacy Initiative grant to fund the Youth Services Assistant's summer salary; and a $600 Collections Enhancement grant to establish an adult graphic novel collection. Library Board 03-22-2012 Page 3 ii. TSLAC Impact Grant application. Impact Grants for Library Innovation and Improvement are administered by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the federal Library Services and Technology Act through the Institute of Museum and Library Services. TCPL has submitted an application for $9,137 to support, expand, and improve the impact of The Colony Public Library's current early literacy outreach to children in day care centers in FY 2012-2013; the proposal is to use the funds for the hourly salary and related benefits for the part-time, temporary Youth Services Library Assistant. Per the grant guidelines, use of "best practices", such as Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR), is encouraged. FOTCPL has funded the purchase of the Every Child Ready to Read kit and the YSLA will receive training in the ECRR principles and practices. iii. CoServ Charitable Foundation Grant application. TCPL has applied for $8,400 to fund the 2012 charges for the Tutor.com service, which includes Live Homework Help; this amount is the same as received from CoServ in 2011. This grant is administered through the City's Library Grants Fund. c. Service improvements: i. Event signage. There is now a button on the City's website which takes users to visual representations of the current event signs; these graphics are links to information about the specific event represented and will be updated weekly. ii. Outreach to children in local daycare centers. First United Methodist Church's daycare has been added to TCPL's daycare outreach program. iii. Review list of April library programs. The Board members reviewed the list; highlights include: • The Online Resource of the Month is Encyclopedia Britannica & Image Quest. • FOTCPL PRESENTS! The Road to Uwungalema, National Library Week puppet show for preschoolers, Tuesday April 10th at 10 a.m. • FOTCPL PRESENTS! Annual Springtime Tea; for 6 years and older; presentation includes the history and etiquette of tea, Saturday, April 21St at 2 p.m. Tickets $5 per person go on sale beginning Tuesday, April 3rd • Teen Anime Club Spring Festival, Saturday, April 21St, 7 p.m., an Asian cultural festival with games and other activities.
