1. RECEIVE INPUT AND DISCUSSION OF PLAYGROUND DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR
FRIENDSHIP, DAVE COWAN AND CARR CHAPMAN PARKS -
Pam welcomed residents and told them this is the first time we have had a "PickA Playspace" meeting- a
meeting that gives the residents a chance to give their input on playgrounds for their neighborhoods. Pain
explained how the CDC Board spends their portion of the sales tax revenue, and that much of it is spent on
creating opportunities for play. She also explained the city's designation as a Playful City and gave
information about the Play TC! Task Force.
Dennis Sims, from Dunkin Sims & Stoffels, explained that he is the design consultant and his firm creates the
construction documents so the play structures can be installed. He said that all the firms present tonight are
good firms and would do a good job.
Prior to the residents visiting each firm, Pam explained the current concept for each park and added that they
can be changed based on comments received tonight. Carr-Chapman Park has bright colors and is unique
from other parks because it has more new climbing structures; it is also the most vandalized park. Dave
Cowan Park has a lot of mature trees so it was decided to keep the nature theme and use natural colors.
Friendship Park is going to focus on universal access as there are many requests for this at this park.
The residents were given score sheets to rate each playground manufacturer for each park and instructed to
record any comments regarding each park on the score sheet. Residents who live close to Dave Cowan Park
expressed their concern for safety - cars travel very fast by the park and they park on both sides of the street
so only one car can get thru at a time. Others asked if new benches and trash receptacles could be added and
Pam told them to include this on their score sheets. Those who frequent Friendship Park are concerned that
the traditional merry-go-round will be removed and replaced with an upgraded version, but they prefer the
current traditional model.
Pam thanked all the residents for coming to the meeting. She told them their comments would be reviewed
and taken into consideration. When a final decision has been made for each playground, the residents here
tonight will receive an email with the f nal design.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:51 p.m.
