CITY OF THE COLONY
KEEP THE COLONY BEAUTIFUL BOARD
NOVEMBER 17, 2011
After determining that a quorum was present, the Keep The Colony Beautiful Board of the City
of The Colony, Texas convened into regular session which was held on Thursday, November
17, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall, 6800 Main Street,
The Colony, Texas, at which time the following items were addressed:
Board Members Present: Linda Van Vranken, Joe Zacha, Richard Kuether, Alan Ladd,
Peggy Chenault, Curtis Hatherly and Ruby Lawrence (arrived at 6:41 pm). Present from
Staff: Iris Browder, Joe Perez and Terry Gilman
1.0 CALL MEETING TO ORDER
Chairman Van Vranken called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.
2.0 CITIZEN INPUT
Jarod Ibarolle, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones located in The Colony, came
by to introduce himself to the board.
3.0 MINUTES
A motion was made to approve the minutes from the September 29, 2011 by
board member Hatherly and seconded by board member Zacha. Motion carried
6-0.
4.0 DISCUSSION
4.1 Receive a report on the outcome of the fall citywide cleanup.
Terry Gilman provided the board with the results from the fall citywide cleanup.
This year there was an estimated 400 vehicles, that came through the lines at the
cleanup and the city handed out 325 goodie bags with all kinds of information
from various departments. The city used six roll off trucks for trash and two
boom trucks to help unload the brush. The following was collected at the site:
approximately 750 cubic yards of trash, 180 cubic yards of green waste, 5,000
pounds of paper were shredded and 17,000 pounds of electronic waste were
collected and recycled. In addition, Freon was removed from 37 appliances and
there were 50 tires collected.
Board member Chenault asked what the breakdown for the total cost of the fall
and spring cleanup are. Mr. Gilman stated that it is included in the contractual
cost with Allied Waste; the dollar value is about $25,000 for each cleanup so a
total of $50,000 for both cleanups. That cost includes the equipment used, man
power and disposal cost at land field. However, the cost does not cover city staff
overtime.
4.2 Receive a report on the outcome of Make a Difference Day.
Joe Perez provided the board with a slideshow presentation on the outcome of
Make a Difference Day. The City was able to organize six projects throughout
the city which included four Community Image projects, two Park cleanups and
utilized over 80 volunteers. The City also partnered with Al's Hugs and
Hammers who organized a food drive for our local food bank and a blood drive in
which the donations from the blood drive went to a resident located in The
Colony. In addition to what was being done in The Colony, another non-profit
organization Metro Relief, provided meals to 225 homeless individuals and 150
pairs of shoes and clothing to 200 individuals in Fort Worth in which over 60
volunteers were utilized.
At the end of the event volunteers met at Lion's club park where the City
provided everyone with pizza, drinks, Make a Difference Day t-shirts and bags.
Joe stated that, "Overall Make a Difference Day was a success and we had a great
turn out and anticipate that next year will be even bigger and better."
4.3 Discuss and consider adopting Keep The Colony Beautiful Bylaws.
Item was pulled from the agenda until City Council approves the Bylaws. The
item will be place on the next meeting agenda.
