THE COLONY TREE ADVISORY BOARD
SPECIAL SESSION
FEBRUARY 10TH 2011

1. CITIZEN'S INPUT-
None.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF DECEMBER 9TH 2010 -
Motion to approve the minutes - Mahle; second - Braby; motion passes with all ayes.
3. DISCUSSION AND REVIEW OF THE FINAL 2010 TREE CITY USA APPLICATION -
Keith told the board the application process has changed, it is now done online; the board has a copy of the
application. The .final expenditures for 2010 are $94,882.31. Next year there will be new trees to count at the
Police Dept. building and along North Colony Blvd., and we will also be planting new trees at Friendship
Park, Dave Cowan Park and Carr/Chopman Park.
4. DISCUSSION AND CONSIDERATION OF THE NUMBER OF TREES PROJECTED TO BE
PLANTED IN THE COLONY OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE
NORTH TEXAS REGIONAL TREE INITIATIVE -
A City Council member in Richardson is trying to get cities to commit a certain number of trees they will
plant in the next 10 years. The goal of this program is to get as many cities/communities to get involved and
plant 3 million trees in 10 years. Keith and Pam said The Colony's commitment is to plant 7, 000 trees in 10
years which consists of trees being planted by the city with county funding, The Tribute, Austin Ranch,
TXDOT Green Ribbon, new/existing development, and CDC/City.
Motion to approve the planting of 7, 000 trees in the next 10 years for the North Texas Regional Tree Initiative
ILlahle; second - Beckel; motion passes.
5. REVIEW OF GOALS FOR 2011-
Keith reviewed the goals for 2011 -
• Develop a method of obtaining information regarding the public's attitudes and knowledge of trees
develop an online survey
• Get elected officials to be more proactive - invite them to tree related events and encourage
participation in the Regional Tree Initiative
• Conduct street and/or park tree inventory - discuss resources with GIS Dept. to gather tree data
• Develop a standard tree care policy
• Develop a standard tree planting policy
• Develop a standard tree-related education policy
6. DISCUSS AND CONSIDER A LOCATION AND DATE FOR THE 2011 ARBOR DAY EVENT -
The 5"' grade class from Camey Elementary School will participate. The event will be held at Five Star on
April 29`x'.
