HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/23/97 Library Board MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY OCTOBER 23, 1997 A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Jayme Skelton at 7:00 pm. at City Hall, 5151 North Colony Blvd. Present: Sandri Gehrk Place 1 Wayne Bullard Place 6 Diana Kruzich Place 2 Sue Parks Place 7 James AIthaus Place 3 Joan Sveinsson Library Director Jayme Skelton Place 5 Jacqie Waldrop-Hays Library Secretary Absent: Lorraine Clark Place 4 (Personal business) 1. Joint Work Session with the Parks & Recreation Board: 1.1. Presentation from the Quality of Life Citizens Study Committee on proposals for funding of Capital projects for the improvement of Library and Parks and Recreation services and facilities. The information was presented by the Quality of Life Committee members Richard Seidler and Jorge Diaz. Improvements that could be funded by an economic development sales tax were discussed. 1.2. Public input regarding the proposals presented by the Quality of Life Citizens Study Committee. Betty McKean, Economic Development Director fielded questions from the public regarding the presentation. The meeting recessed at 8:15 pm and reconvened at 8:30 pm. 2. Citizen's Input. None 3. Consideration of approval of minutes of the board meeting held September 25, 1997. Minutes stand approved. 4. Reports: 4.1 Quality of Life Committee Representative: Member Bullard asked the Library Board members to please attend these meetings. Director Sveinsson stated there would be a Leadership Breakfast on Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997 from 7:00 am to 9:00 am at the Bistro. Diana Kruzich volunteered to represent the Friends and the Library Board at this breakfast. Other events re: The Quality of Life Committee were announced: Thursday Nov. 13th for the Ice Cream Social at 7:00 pm at City Hall; Monday Nov. 17th for a council briefing, and Monday Dec. 1st City Council will consider calling the sales tax election. 4.2 Chairman: No report. 4.3 NTRLS System Representative: No report. 4.1. Library Director: The Youth Services Librarian position is still vacant; we have a few more applicants to interview. The salary has been raised to $2050.00/month, however, it is still not competitive with the surrounding cities. The September 1997 report shows that the number of card holders is down; however, Circulation Supervisor Collins has begun purging inactive patrons which has reduced this figure. Computer training has begun for the Library staff. Library Secretary Waldrop- Hays has received training in Powerpoint 97 for Windows 95, Windows 95, and Word. Director Sveinsson has also received training in Windows 95 and Word. The Library has received 1 new file server and 8 new computers for the staff. We will also be receiving a new CD Rom changer and a separate workstation will be dedicated for it. The November Library Board meeting falls on Thanksgiving Holiday therefore the November meeting will be moved to November 20th and the December meeting falls on Christmas so the December meeting will be moved to December 18th. The Library Board list that was sent out from City Hall has a typo regarding Sue Parks phone number. Her home phone number is (972) 624-0654.
