CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD
OCTOBER 28, 2010
A REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD of the City of The Colony, Texas, was call,
to order by Chair Skelton at 7:01 p.m.

2. Consider approval of the minutes of August 26, 2010, and September 23, 201
Regular Sessions.
Member Rushing moved and Member Rodriguez-Terrell seconded the motion to approve t
minutes of the August 26, 2010 meeting; the motion passed unanimously. Direa
Sveinsson requested that the minutes of the September 23, 2010 meeting be tablE
Member Rodriguez-Terrell moved to do so and Member Bullard seconded the motion, whi
passed unanimously.
3. Discussion and reports regarding implementation of Library Board goals and projec
for 2010.
a. Library visits.
No members visited other libraries since the last meeting.
b. Board presence at TCPL events.
Chair Skelton and Members Rodriguez-Terrell and Bullard attended the "Meet _t
Authors & Illustrators" event. Member Rodriguez-Terrell thought the event w
successful; Chair Skelton indicated that the most traffic occurred in the afternoon. VE
few people attended the presentations; that feature will probably be dropped from nE
year's event. At Pirate Days, Chair Skelton assisted with booth set-up and Memt
Bullard helped on Saturday for three hours; the event was well attended, and the boc
was well located and successful. Member Rushing plans to attend the October 30th Te
Halloween Movie Night. Director Sveinsson reported that TCPL's booth at the Americ
Heroes event will be located in the street, so the pop-up shade structure will not be al
to be staked down; Chair Skelton indicated that she may be able to supply gallon jugs
be used to weigh it down. Members Kruzich and Rushing volunteered to assist in setti
up the booth. Director Sveinsson listed other upcoming events: Pictures with Santa
December 4th; TCPL's booth at Holiday in the Park on December 4th; and the farr
holiday puppet show on December 16th
c. TCPL 2012 30th anniversary celebration.
No items were brought up for discussion or report.
4. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities:
a. September membership drive and book sale promotion.
Friends President Bullard reported that the membership drive was successful; five
members joined, one of them as a lifetime member, and eight members renewed;

membership now is 72 (lifetime, basic family, and business memberships). The "Bag
Batch of Books" promotion resulted in sales of 21 book totes full of sale items, whi(
cleared out more of the back stock of slow-moving sale items
b. Fall events.
FOTCPL will sponsor "Pictures with Santa" from 12-2 p.m. on December 4th, the holid,
family puppet show at 7 p.m. on December 16th, and TCPL's Holiday Luncheon f
volunteers, FOTCPL officers and Board members on December 6tn
c. Support of teen library programs.
FOTCPL has approved the request from the Teen Anime Club to conduct fundraiser
under the auspices of the Friends. The proceeds will benefit TCPL teen activities; ti
club's fundraising goal is to assist members with registration fees to attend A-Kon
(anime convention) in June 2011.
5. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items:
a. Part-time Library Administrative Assistant position.
To date, fifty-eight applications have been received and first round interviews
underway.
b. FY 2010-11 Loan Star Libraries Grant proposal.
The grant will be $12,995. Staff is working on the Plan of Action, which must I
submitted by October 31St. Proposed projects will include funding for 1) a Youth Service
Library Assistant for youth outreach, assisting with Youth Services projects, and assistii
the Director with Teen programs, and 2) furniture and shelving parts.
c. September Library Card Signup promotion and competition.
A total of 291 new library cards were issued; TCPL won the competition. Little Elm Pub
Library issued 218 cards; Lake Cities Library issued 148 cards.
d. Teen Advisory Panel: programs and Anime Club.
The Talent Show was canceled due to lack of entries.
e. Pirate Days booth activity.
Director Sveinsson reported that the booth activity was very good; at least 600 contac
were made and fourteen library cards were issued.
f. Texas Library Snapshot Day.
TCPL held Snapshot Day on Thursday, October 21St; statistics for various activities we
collected; surveys of customers were conducted; and data was submitted to the Tex
Library Association for compilation with that of other libraries throughout the state. TCI
used the newly-acquired software to produce a "READ" poster of the 150th customer
the day - which turned out to be a_ family of three (parents and child) which is now
display in the Library.
g. Review of list of November and December library programs.
Director Sveinsson distributed the list to the Board members.
