HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/24/97 Library Board MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY JULY 24, 1997 A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Jayme Skelton at 7:01 pm. Present: Sandri Gehrke Place 1 Diana Kruzich Place 2 James Althaus Place 3 Lorraine Clark Place 4 Jayme Skelton Place 5 Wayne Bullard Place 6 Joan Sveinsson Library Director Jacqie Waldrop-Hays Library Secretary Absent: None, Place 7 is still vacant. 1. Citizen's Input. None. 2. Consideration of approval of minutes of the board meeting held June 19, 1997. Minutes stand approved. 3. Reports: a. Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee Representative: Member Bullard stated there was nothing to report at this time and unless we hear back regarding any of the issues we can take this item off future agendas. b. Chairman: Member Althaus stated that he has information on the upcoming State Library Workshop if anyone needs it. c. NTRLS System Representative: Director Sveinsson stated that the City Council approved re- appointment of Patricia Mooney as Representative and James Althaus as the Alternate. d. Library Director: Director Sveinsson distributed to the Library Board members the newest edition of the Intellectual Freedom Handbook page 1 published by the Texas Library Association. Director Sveinsson attended the American Library Association Annual Conference. She received valuable information from a presentation re: services for hard-of-hearing patrons, as well as from a presentation about developing a circulating CD-ROM collection. She made contact with some new vendors at the exhibits; she won $250 worth of hardbound children's books in the Scholastic Book Fair drawing. A City Council session is scheduled for Monday, July 28th to review the proposed budget. Some cuts have already been made in order to meet the available resources. Director Sveinsson reviewed the proposed budget with the Board. The patio table has been installed. The Summer Reading Club registration is at 685; approximately 300 children have completed the program and a party is scheduled for the children who have completed the program on Saturday, August 2nd at 2:00p.m. Circulation set a new record in June: 13,414 items were checked out! This figure represents a 28.6% increase over June 1996. -- An Open House will be held at City Hall on Tuesday, July 29th, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., featuring displays by the City departments and by developers. Director Sveinsson asked for volunteers from the Library Board to assist her at the Open House. The Library has copies of the video from the Town Hall meeting re: the August bond election. Director Sveinsson and Youth Services Librarian Brightwell attended a State Library Internet workshop this month. Reference Librarian Sapp and Technical Services Librarian May will attend the same workshop next month. Some review of our Internet Access Policy may be in order. The cable connecting the Library's file server with the City Hall and Police Dept. servers are in place and the repeaters have been installed. It is now possible, given the necessary user rights, to login to any of the three servers from any workstation on the three networks. The Library will be closed on Friday, Aug. 8th for In-Service Day. __ A satisfied patron sent a letter to Director of Administrative Services Hicks in recognition of the "superior page 2 level of service exhibited by the library staff". Reference Librarian Sapp and Director Sveinsson were noted for their efforts in assisting the patron and her husband with a difficult Internet search. The letter stated "We had a very positive experience with The Colony Library staff and look forward to supporting the library in its fund raising efforts." Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm.
