CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD
AUGUST 26, 2010
A REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called i
order by Chair Skelton at 7:05 p.m.

2. Consider approval of the minutes of June 24, 2010, and July 29, 2010 Regular Sessions.
The were approved as presented.
3. Discussion and reports regarding implementation of Library Board goals and project
for 2010.
a. Open Government Training.
All members have completed this training; this goal is now completed.
b. Library visits.
No members visited other libraries since the last meeting. Member Rodriguez-Terrell plan
to visit Piano's Davis Library; Chair Skelton plans to visit Lewisville Public Library.
c. Board presence at TCPL events.
Chair Skelton and Member Rushing reported that they assisted with the setup and operatio
of TCPL's booth at the Back 2 School Bash.
d. TCPL 2012 30th anniversary celebration.
The idea of a photo wall was discussed; Chair Skelton will research this concept. MembE
Bullard suggested that the Board and FOTCPL solicit sponsorships through a joint letter
collecting history of local businesses and of the city was discussed. Member Rodrigue2
Terrell suggested a guessing game using 1982 photos of current TCPL staff, volunteer;
and Board members. Another suggestion was a Cole Porter program.
4. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities:
a. September membership drive and book sale promotion.
FOTCPL has been challenged to a friendly membership drive competition with the Little Elr
and Lake Cities Friends groups during the month of September; those who renew or join i
September will receive a free book from the ongoing sale. Those who join as a lifetim
member or upgrade from basic to lifetime will also get a free book bag. FOTCPL will als,
offer "Bag a Batch of Books Deal" in September in which customers may purchase a.
FOTCPL book bag and fill it full of sale items from the specially-marked sale table for $4.
b. Fall events.
October will be a full month of events sponsored by FOTCPL:
Saturday, October 2, 10-4 p.m. Meet the Authors and Illustrators
Saturday, October 9, "The Pirates Are Coming" Film Festival
Saturday & Sunday, October 16-17: FOTCPL and TCPL booth at Pirate Days

Saturday, October 23, 1 p.m.: Teen Advisory Panel (TAP) Teen Read Week Talent Show
c. Report regarding consignment sales.
Sales through Texas Book Consignments have been very successful; in August, FOTCPL
received $267.62 from consignment sales.
Receive update from staff and discuss the following items:
a. September Library Card Signup promotion and competition.
Director Sveinsson reported that TCPL has again been challenged to a friendly competition
with Little Elm and Lake Cities libraries for the most new cardholders signed up during this
national promotion. TCPL has won in the previous years, but these communities are
growing rapidly, so the competition may be stiffer this year.
b. Furniture for History Corner
Director Sveinsson reported that funding will be added to TCPL's proposed budget to pay
for most of the cost of this furniture; FOTCPL has pledged to pay the balance.
c. Report re: response to summer reading incentive clubs and promotions.
Director Sveinsson presented statistics for the reading incentive clubs (total registration up
7%) and youth summer program attendance (total up 31 New programs responsible for
much of the increase included the presentation of story times to children at day care
facilities by grant-funded library assistants, the Fired Up About Reading program series
presented by TCFD Chief and firefighters, and the new teen programs.
d. Fall 2010 TAP-hosted teen programs.
The Teen Advisory Panel has developed a brochure to promote their fall programs and the
Teen Space page on the TCPL website. The programs include the monthly "Read the
Movie" program, a talent show for Teen Read Week, the monthly meeting of the Teen
Writers Club, and a Teen Halloween Movie night.
e. Request for Board member assistance with preparation for the October 2nd "Meet the
Authors and Illustrators" event.
In response to Director Sveinsson's request for assistance, Member Bullard volunteered to
handle sending email invitations out to authors and writers' organizations, Chair Skelton and
Member Rodriguez-Terrell volunteered to assist the authors and illustrators by "table sitting"
for those needing a break or giving presentations, and Member Rodriguez-Terrell also
offered to serve as photographer for the event.
f. Collection development.
Staff is in the process of a major review of the non-fiction collection, removing worn and out-
dated materials, noting needs for replacement and updating, and shifting the collection to
create additional space for the expansion of the Young Adult fiction collection. The YA
graphic novel collection, which is very popular with teen and adult customers, has
expanded; a new collection of graphic novels for younger readers has been established in
the juvenile area.
g. FY 2010-11 budget.
No additional changes have been made to the proposed budget at this point.
