HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/29/10 LibraryMINUTES CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD JULY 29, 2010 A REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Skelton at 7:00 p.m. PRESENT: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Diana Kruzich Place 2 Frederick Rushing Place 3 Nicole Rodriguez-Terrell Place 4 (arrived 7:24 pm.) Jayme Skelton Place 5 Wayne Bullard Place 6 Sue Parks Place 7 (arrived 7:37 p.m.) STAFF: Joan Sveinsson Library Director (attended via phone) Note: Director Sveinsson's out-of-state travel was extended due to a family medical situation. 1. Citizen Input. None. 2. Consider approval of the minutes of June 24, 2010 Regular Session. Tabled to the August meeting. 3. Discuss and consider approval of revisions and updates to the Library's Long Range Plan. (Member Rodriguez-Terrell arrived during this discussion). Members of the Board were provided with copies of the final draft of the Plan. The members discussed the Strategic Priorities and were agreement with them. Motion to recommend to City Council the Long Range Plan for 2010-2015 as presented - Bullard; second - Kruzich. Motion passed unanimously. 4. Discussion and reports regarding implementation of Library Board goals and projects for 2010. a. Open Government Training. (Member Parks arrived during this discussion). Six of the seven Board members have completed this training. b. Library visits. Members Kruzich and Gehrke visited Allen Public Library; Member Gehrke described the 2-story facility, which includes a cafe that has a "honor system" book sale, an impressive teen room; and a large donated aquarium. c. Board presence at TCPL events. Chair Skelton attended the July "Read the Movie" night which featured Cirque du Freak: the Vampire's Assistant; she reported that there was good attendance at this fun event. Director Sveinsson invited the Board members to assist at TCPL's booth at the Back 2 School Bash on August 17th, as well as to attend the August 5th Read the Movie" featuring Clueless based on Jane Austen's Emma, the TAP BYOGB (Bring Your Own Board Game) event on August 11 at 6:30 p.m., and the Teen Writers Group meeting on at 6:30 p.m. on August 11th at which the participants will have the opportunity to chat with local authors Vincent Hobbes and Nathan Palmer about their experiences in writing and publishing their books. Library Board 07-29-2010 Page 2 d. TCPL 2012 30th anniversary celebration. Member Bullard reported that he will follow up with the TCHS band directors and other bands in the area, including a marimba group, regarding performances for the celebration. 5. Receive update and discuss the following Friends of the Library activities: a. Wal-Mart grant. Member Gehrke reported that she and Friends Vice-President Mac Caldwell accepted the grant of $500 at Wal-Mart's "Grand Re-Opening" event on July 16th. The grant will be used for shelving parts and/or furnishings. b. Fall events. October will be a full month of events sponsored by FOTCPL: Saturday, October 2, 10-4 p.m. Meet the Authors and Illustrators Saturday, October 9, "The Pirates Are Coming" Film Festival Saturday & Sunday, October 16-17: FOTCPL and TCPL booth at Pirate Days Saturday, October 23, 1 p.m.: Teen Advisory Panel (TAP) Teen Read Week Talent Show 6. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items: a. Praxair Foundation Grant. Director Sveinsson reported that the three early literacy workstations are in place and have been well-received by the children and parents. One workstation has bilingual programs; the other two have only English programs, but offer a greater number of programs. A thank you note with photos of the workstations in use by children and parents was sent to the Praxair Foundation by Electronic Resources Librarian Cox. At a recent City Council meeting, Director Sveinsson expressed appreciation to the Facilities Maintenance staff for their assistance with the installation. b. Summer Programs and Promotions. Director Sveinsson reported that Oldies-But-Goodies Book Read promotion will be accompanied by a half-price sale on older fiction books. Summer Reading programs and activities end the second week of August. c. FY 2010-2011 budget. The proposed County library funding is being reduced by 5%, resulting in $3,055 less revenue than Director Sveinsson had projected. In addition, the City Manager requested a reduction of $7,923 from the Library's FY 2010-2011 budget. The combined impact is a loss of $10,978. Prior to these reductions, the currently-frozen Administrative Assistant position was included in the proposed budget; Director Sveinsson opted to reduce the hours of that position to 32 hours per week and to reduce overtime to $400; these reductions would have the least impact on public service. The resulting reduction totals $11,096. 7. Review of Board meeting schedule for the rest of 2010. Meeting dates will be: August 26; September 23; October 28; December 2.
