1. Citizen Input.
None.
2. Consider approval of the minutes of March 25, 2010 Regular Session.
The minutes were approved as presented.
3. Discuss and, consider approval of revisions and updates to the Library's Long Range
Plan.
At Director Sveinsson's request, this item was tabled to the May 2010 meeting.
4. Discussion and reports regarding implementation of Library Board goals and projects
for 2010.
a. Open Government Training.
Members Gehrke, Kruzich, and Rodriguez -Terrell have completed the training and have
submitted their certificates to Director Sveinsson.
b. America's Poetic Journey program.
(Member Bullard arrived during this report). The program was considered a success. As
the audience was small, the seating was quickly re -arranged to achieve a more intimate
atmosphere and all the attendees — even the very youngest -- participated in the poetry
readings.
c. Library visits.
No progress was reported toward this goal.
d. Board presence at TCPL events.
Director Sveinsson invited the Board members to attend "Read the Movie" featuring Of
Mice and Men (May 6, 6:30 p.m.) and the Get Ready for Fall Gardening (May 18) and
Green Cleaning and Pest Control (May 19) programs, as well as other upcoming events,
which are publicized via the events calendar on the Library's website.
e. TCPL 2012 30th anniversary celebration.

Member Bullard reported that he still plans to send inquiries to an FOTCPL member and
Reference Librarian Margolis about music group contacts. Discussion included potential
dates for the event. At the request of the Board, Director Sveinsson researched the date
of TCPL's original opening; it was on February 17, 1982. It was suggested that the
President's Day holiday should be avoided in the selection of an event date.
5. Receive update from staff and discuss the following items:
a. Public relations events and programs.
1) Picturing America program series.
The program series is complete; the final report needs to be submitted by May 31.
2) 2010 Census.
The Census Bureau did not come through with the funding approvals for the
pamphlet, so staff decided to simply distribute the bags, flying discs, and pens.
3) Spring Tea.
Although the Tea was not "sold -out" this year, those who did attend enjoyed it.
4) Texas Library Snapshot Day.
The Texas Library Association has initiated "Texas Library Snapshot Day" to allow
the statewide library community to gather similar data to be used to promote
libraries, to show the value of libraries to decision -makers, and to increase public
awareness. Participating libraries picked on day between April 26 through May 7,
2010 to collect statistics, photos, and stories. TCPL's Snapshot Day was on
Tuesday, April 27th; The Colony Courier- Leader carried a front-page story about it.
It did not turn out to be one of TCPL's busiest Tuesdays, but staff did collect the
targeted information and conducted surveys. Those respondents who included
comments on their surveys were very complimentary about TCPL's resources and
services ("Great, beautiful, and very friendly people!"; "I like the variety"; "Very
friendly staff, very nice library"; "Top notch"; "Enjoy the kid's reading area!"; "Great
service!"). In the post -event report to TLA, staff will include suggestions regarding
improvement of the survey response options for the next Snapshot Day.
b. FY 09-10 and FY 2010-11 budget considerations.
The Library's budget meeting is scheduled for the end of May.
c. Service improvements:
1) Collection development, including new electronic resources.
TCPL now offers TumbleBooksTM -- a library of children's books presented in a
variety of ways, along with a collection of learning games — as part of its 24/7
resources. TCPL is now offering two collections of ebooks: TCPL added over 400
non-fiction titles to the NetLibrary site last summer and has finally received the
MARC records to include them in the catalog and on TCPL's Overdrive site — where
previously only downloadable audio was offered — TCPL is now offering ebooks —
starting with 147 fiction titles and 84 non-fiction titles. These new ebooks, as well as
the downloadable audio books, are included in TCPL's catalog — if a customer who
is logged in to the catalog with his/her library card number and password can link
directly from the catalog record to the audiobook or ebook.

2) Public access computer furnishings; wireless internet access.
The new furniture has arrived and has been installed for the second half of the public
access computers and the reservation station. The majority of the funding for this
phase of the project was from the Loan Star Libraries Grant with the balance from
the Friends of The Colony Public Library. The wireless access point had been failing
repeatedly to the point where customers were giving up on using it; in response, IT
staff has now replaced it with a new wireless point of access.
The next Board meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2010.
The meeting adjourned at 8:01 p.m.
