1) Painting.
The walls in the juvenile area, the end walls of the story corner, and the walls of the
Quiet Room have all been painted in new colors. Future plans call for one wall section
outside Library Administration to be painted and for the wallpaper in the family
restroom to be removed and replaced with washable paint.
2) Carpet installation.
The new carpet has been installed. Installation began after closing on Saturday,
January 17th and was completed today. The crews worked into the early hours of the
morning in order to have the public area ready for the 10 a.m. opening on Tuesday.
Director Sveinsson described the process of moving a full range of loaded shelving
using a pneumatic lift system.

3) Wal-Mart donation
Director Sveinsson accepted a $2,000 donation from The Colony Wal-Mart
Supercenter. The donation will be administered by FOTCPL; 50% will be dedicated
for youth programs and 50% towards furniture refurbishment/replacement and facility
renovations.
4) Practicum student.
Practicum student Renee Kirchner will be working with Youth Services Librarian
Snyder on numerous projects this spring.
5) Girl Scout Gold Award project.
The project has been approved by the Girl Scout Gold Award Committee. Girl Scout
Catherine Gillam has begun working on the project tasks.
b. Status report re: grant projects.
1) Texas Book Festival Grants.
TCPL has applied for two grants this year: the Texas Book Festival Technology Grant
to purchase two early literacy computer workstations as reported last month and the
Texas Book Festival Grant for collection development which, if awarded, will be used
to expand and update the juvenile audio kit collection by purchasing juvenile
book/audio CD kits.
2) Loan Star Libraries Grant.
The grant contract was approved at the January 19th City Council meeting. The
signed contract will be sent back to the State Library for signatures. Shortly thereafter,
the grant funds should be deposited in the City's account and credited to the Library
Grants Fund. At that point, the temporary Youth Services Assistant position will be
posted.
3) Picturing America (art) grant.
Reference Librarian Margolis has been notified that the Library has been awarded the
Picturing America (Art) grant presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH), and distributed in collaboration with the American Library Association. She
applied for the grant in October. TCPL will receive forty large, high-quality color
reproductions of the selected masterpieces (24" x 36"). The art will be displayed in the
Quiet Room and may be used in programming. Director Sveinsson is preparing an
application for the We the People Bookshelf grant, which would provide TCPL with the
"Picturing America" Bookshelf collection of 22 books which would be used in
conjunction with the art reproductions for thematic programming.
c. Update re: Friends of the Library activities
1) Annual meeting.
The annual FOTCPL membership meeting will be held Saturday, April 18th at the
Library. The entertainment portion of the meeting will be similar to last year's "Wii
Would Like You to Play" event - an evening of "old school" and electronic gaming.
Staff is researching the potential of borrowing gaming equipment from the North Texas
Regional Library System. NTRLS acquired the equipment to loan to libraries hosting
gaming tournaments and events.

2) Support for TBF grant project.
The Texas Book Festival Technology Grant is limited to $5,000; the amount needed
for the acquisition of two early literacy computer workstations would exceed that
amount by $400. FOTCPL has pledged to make up the difference if TCPL is awarded
the grant.

No requests were presented.
The next Library Board meeting is scheduled for February 26, 2009.
