MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD
OF THE
CITY OF THE COLONY
December 4, 2008
A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order
by Chair Clark at 7:00 p.m.

1. Citizen's Input.
None.
2. Minutes.
Discuss and consider approval of minutes of the board meeting held on October 23, 2008.
This item was tabled to the January 2009 meeting.
3. Discuss and consider approval of proposed Exhibit and Display Policy.
At Director Sveinsson's request, this item was tabled to the January 2009 meeting.
4. Discuss and consider approval of revisions and updates to the Library's Long Range Plan.
At Director Sveinsson's request, this item was tabled to the January 2009 meeting.
5. Receive and discuss presentation regarding new TCPL website.
Director Sveinsson gave a live presentation of the Library's new website, demonstrating the
many new and improved features. The website is hosted and the website development tool
provided by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Electronic Resources
Librarian Cox trained in the use of the tool and then developed the site to meet TCPL's needs.
6. Receive and discuss Library Director's report.
a. Status re: operations.
1) American Heroes: A Salute to Veterans promotion.
The Library had a booth, complete with a shade awning provided by the Parks &
Recreation Department; the booth was well-received. Director Sveinsson gave a
description of the event for those who were unable to attend it; she included a
description of the new Parks & Rec mobile stage.
2) Holiday in the Park promotion.
TCPL will have a booth at the December 6th event to promote TCPL's programs and
services. Director Sveinsson described the Holiday in the Park event, which opens
with the ending of the Parade of Lights. Immediately before the beginning of the
parade, Director Sveinsson plans to walk the parade route to distribute flyers for
TCPL's annual holiday puppet show.
3) Upcoming holiday events.

The Library's annual Photos with Santa will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday
December 6th. The Fiddle Rascals will perform to entertain those waiting for their turn
with Santa. The annual holiday puppet show will be offered at 7 p.m. on Thursday,
December 18th.
4) Disposition of old furniture.
The 1987-vintage lounge chairs and two tables were sold via the online auction used
by the City; the proceeds went to the City's general fund.
5) Girl Scout Gold Award project.
Girl Scout Catherine Gillam, who is also one of TCPL's teen volunteers, has proposed
to develop a project to benefit the Library. She will work to formally establish the
Library's Teen Advisory Panel, including drafting bylaws, recruiting applicants, and
working with the panel through its first year in developing its goals and activities.
b. Status report re: grant projects:
1) Texas Book Festival Grants.
Adult & Outreach Services Librarian Boykin will complete purchases for this year's
grant this week.
Electronic Resources Librarian Cox is preparing an application for next year's Texas
Book Festival Technology Grant to purchase two early literacy computer workstations.
2) Loan Star Libraries Grant.
The Plan of Action has been submitted. Upon approval of the Plan, the State Library
will send the grant contract which Director Sveinsson will take to the City Council for
approval.
c. Update re: Friends of the Library activities.
1) Book sale changes.
Due to the success of the ongoing book sale, FOTCPL officers have decided to cancel
the December and March book sales. The next book sale will be in May.
2) Support of Girl Scout Gold Award project.
FOTCPL has pledged to fund the refreshments for the Teen Advisory Panel meetings.
7. Board member requests for future agenda items.
No additional requests were received.
The next Library Board meeting is scheduled for January 22, 2009.
