HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/18/96 Library Board MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY APRIL 18, 1996 A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony Texas, was called to order by Chair Barton at 8:04 p.m. Present: Patricia Riggs Place 1 Diana Kruzich Place 2 James Althaus Place 3 Dorian Barton Place 4 Jayme Skelton Place 5 Wayne Bullard Place 6 Elizabeth Vaughn Place 7 Joan Sveinsson Library Director Sandra Vondersaar Secretary Absent: None 1. Citizen's Input. None. 2. Consideration of approval of minutes of the board meeting held March 21, 1996. Minutes stand approved. 3. Reports. a. Community Assessment Committee: None b. Library Assessment Committee: Board Member Bullard reported by 1997, shelving capacity at the Library's present location will be 104%. If magazines are kept for only 12 months, shelving capacity will be at 99.4%. Member Bullard also reported on the meeting of the Citizen's Advisory Sub-Committee for Leisure Services Capital Improvements. He stated all requests are being graded by priority without considering expense. Security was the number one priority. It is imperative that citizens know that the financing of a Library can be done by means other than property tax or fees. For example, the 4B sales tax option could be used to secure financing if passed. c. Chairman's Report: Chair Barton stated he is receiving copies of City Council minutes. If members would like to review them please let him know. d. NTRLS System Representative's Report: Director Sveinsson reported Joe Garcia, Executive Director of NTRLS, has resigned. Also, by-law changes were approved; some additional changes will be presented for approval at the Fall 1996 meeting. Patricia Mooney is willing to relinquish her position as The Colony Public Library representative to NTRLS. If anyone is interested in filling this position, please contact Director Sveinsson. --. e. New Technologies Committee Report: Director Sveinsson furnished hand-outs regarding ALA's challenge to the Communications Decency Act and invited board members to listen to a tape from the PLA presentation "Censorship in Cyberspace: A Whole New Ballgame?" after the meeting. f. Library Director's Report: Director Sveinsson stated the Library is currently interviewing candidates for the position of Library Page. Applications are being accepted through noon, April 29, 1996 for Summer Circulation Clerk. Youth Services Librarian Debbie Brightwell secured a donation of printing services for the Summer Reading Club packet envelopes. The 1995 edition of Thomas Register was donated via Mike Lynch. The Friends of The Colony Public Library bake sale brought in over $192. Director Sveinsson also reported the Friends Murder Mystery and Potluck Dinner was a huge success; a new membership to The Friends of The Colony Library was gained. On June 8th, the Friends and the Library will hold a combined event to include a rummage sale, book sale, and outdoor youth programs. There will also be a special day at the Library for Mom's on Saturday, April 11. Director Sveinsson reminded board members that she and Technical Services Librarian Scott May will be attending the Texas Library Association Conference in Houston the week of April 22nd. Director Sveinsson also reported re~arding the Public Library Association Conference she attend an March. There was an excellent preconference seminar on "How to Build a Library." A resource binder with step-by-step procedures for building a library were furnished. Copies of the binder are being reproduced for City Manager Johnny Smith, Director of Administrative Services Patti Hicks, Capital Projects Leisure and Community Services Committee Chair Carolyn Rapisarda and member Wayne Bullard, Reference Librarian Janet Sapp, and a "floating" copy that can be loaned as needed. Director Sveinsson attended the following additional programs regarding building projects: Buildings for the 21st Century; Building Better Libraries: Selecting, Hiring and Working with Architects; Owning Up: What Makes a Good Owner From an Architect's Point of View; Turn It On: Library Lighting and wiring; Access Versus Security: Is It Possible to Have Both?; Kids Places, Kid Spaces: Designing for Children's Services. She also attended: Serve 'em Right: Steering Staff to Super Service; Censorship in Cyberspace: A Whole New Ballgame?; Pleased to Meet You: Introducing the Internet to the Business Community; Mastering the Internet Job Search. The following tapes were also purchased and will be available in the Professional Collection: Censorship in Cyberspace: A Whole New Ballgame?; Mastering the Internet Job Search; Get Slimed~: Make the Science and Invention Connection; CD-ROM to Go: Developing a Circulating CD-ROM Collection; Into the Lion's Den: Access to Religious Materials in Public Libraries; Getting Real About Make-Believe: Why Subject Access to Fiction Matters; Pleased to Meet You: Introducing the Internet to the Business Community.
