HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/28/08 Library MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY February 28, 2008 A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Clark at 7:01 p.m. Present: Sandi Gehrke Diana Kruzich Wanda Spears Lorraine Clark Jayme Skelton Wayne Bullard Sue Parks Joan Sveinsson Place 1 Place 2 Place 3 Place 4 Place 5 Place 6 Place 7 Library Director (arrived 7:07 p.m.) 1. Citizens Input. None. 2. Consideration and approval of minutes of the board meeting held on January 24, 2008. The minutes were approved as presented. 3. Discussion and consideration of meeting schedule for 2008. The following dates were proposed for the rest of the 2008 Library Board meetings: March 20; April 24; May 22; June 19; July 24; August 28; September 25; October 23; December 4. Member Kruzich moved to accept the proposed schedule. The motion was seconded by Member Skelton and passed unanimously. 4. Library Director's report. a. Status report re: operations. Reference Librarian Margolis will return from medical leave next week. The Library has joined a consortium of NTRLS member libraries that has formed to provide a shared collection of downloadable audio, video, and e-books. Electronic Resources Librarian Cox is TCPL's representative on the committee that is working the technical aspects; Adult & Outreach Services Librarian Boykin is TCPL's representative on the collection development committee; Director Sveinsson is working with the other consortium library directors to develop the consortium's governance policies. This month's Continuing Education program for daycare providers and preschool teachers broke a record for registration - over 70 registrations - then the weather turned bad and the final attendance count dropped to 42. This program series is very successful and routinely has better turnout than most adult programs. The Library is still seeking a volunteer instructor for the ESL classes, which are suspended until a volunteer comes forth. Instructor training is available. Technical Services Librarian Charters is now serving as the staff liaison to The Colony History Project committee. She has received approval from the City Manager for the funding for the first phase of developing the resources to process and house the collection. The collection will be housed in the History Corner (formerly the income tax forms corner) and will include documents, maps, genealogies, realia, audiovisual materials, and will be equipped with a computer. TCPL has a number of public relations and marketing efforts underway. A PowerPoint presentation promoting the current month's programs, promotional events, and other items of note runs on the first OPAC station at the front of the Library. A brochure listing the upcoming month's programs is sent to teachers in the six local elementary schools. Next month, Director Sveinsson and Youth Services Librarian Snyder will present information about the Library's services at a meeting of all the L1SD librarians. Director Sveinsson, Electronic Resources Librarian Cox, and Circulation Clerk Sutton will staff a library booth at Griffin Middle School's College Fair on March 11th. Library staff will also participate in Stewarts Creek Elementary School's Literacy Night on March 2yth; one staff member will issue TCPL cards in the school library, others will staff a booth in the cafeteria to promote TCPL's services. b. Status re: grant projects. Staff is in the process of expending the Loan Star Libraries Grant funds. c. Update re: Friends of the Library activities. The next book sale will be on Saturday, March 1st; the June book sale has been rescheduled to May 31st as the multipurpose room will be used for early voting on the first Saturday in June. The FOTCPL annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 7 p.m. The entertainment part of the event will be a game night, featuring traditional and electronic games, and is being organized by Reference Librarian Margolis and Technical Services Librarian Charters.
