DISCUSSION OF THE DOG PARK - Stephen Sohn welcomed everyone to the first meeting to discuss building a dog park in The Colony. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss possible locations for the park, amenities for the park, and to exchange ideas. Locations - · Taylor Park - old ball field area behind the Aquatic Park · Bill Allen Memorial Park - behind the amphitheater · Peter's Colony Elementary & Griffin - big open grassy area behind these schools · Consider using an area that has little or no possibility of being used for something else · Property north of Blue Sky · The location needs to be at least 5 acres · The park should be built in a central location with good parking · Consider building a dog park in multiple locations · Wherever the park is built, it should not interfere with other activities that may take place at that same park · Consider the noise factor when choosing a location · Reminder - the theater group does use the amphitheater · Dog parks in other cities have been built near or under power lines Amenities - Design - Usage- · Need benches and shade for owners · Plant trees along the fence line · No obstacle courses or toys in the dog park · Build separate area for each size dog -large, medium and small · Make a "time-out" area · Use a vinyl-coated chain link fence - it won't rust · The park should be irrigated · Have water hoses available and a water station · On weekdays at other dog parks, the attendance is about 25 - after 5:00 / on Saturdays the attendance has been at least 100 · Post rules · Provide plastic bags for poop Maintenance - · The Parks & Rec. Dept. would do the maintenance · Recruit volunteers to help with poop patrol Fundraising - · Sell bricks and have your dogs name engraved on the brick. The bricks could be placed by the gate entrance. Other cities have done this and it has been very successful. Other - · Get information from other cities to find out how they utilize volunteers at their dog park · Post notices about our dog park in other cities · Some City Council members think the dog park is a good idea but the biggest issue for them will be the maintenance. Having a group of volunteers committed to helping maintain the park will help sell the project to Council. There being no more business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m. I~ 1{-UcV Kathy Neal, Re~ording Secretary -J~~~ on Beckel, President
