HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/14/06 Cultural Arts I CITY OF THE COLONY DENTON COUNTY, TEXAS MINUTES OF THE CULTURAL ARTS BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY October 14,2006 A REGULAR SESSION of the Cultural Arts Board of the City of The Colony was called to order by Chair Whitmore at 9: 1 0 a.m. Present: Neale Whitmore Cynthia Shailer Liz Ripperger Amy Long-Manuel Joan Lux Place 3 Place 4 Place 6 Place 7 (arrived @ 9:20 a.m.) Place 5 1. Citizen Input None. 2. Minutes I Consideration of approval of the minutes of the Cultural Arts Board meeting held August 12, 2006 and the Cultural Arts Board work session held August 30, 2006. The minutes were approved as presented. 3. Discussion of possible upcoming arts events The Lakeside Community Theater is presenting a production of "Dial M for Murder" 4. Discussion of Historical Park request with help from 4B board - sculptures Vice-chair Lux told the board about the idea of the Cultural Arts Board working in conjunction with the Historical Park committee of the 4B Board to select artists and themes for at least four pieces of sculpture in 3 area parks. The project would be funded by4B. The board discussed the idea and made several suggestions for 4B, ideas of where they could make contacts, but the board feels that CAB's function does not include what is suggested, although board would like to be involved in final sculpture decisions and recommendation to council. 5. Discussion for approval of Ballet Plus as a user of the Lakeside Arts Center I Request to use the space until December, with a possible option to extend if needed. Motion to recommend made by Chair Whitmore, seconded by Vice-chair Lux. Motion for recommendation to City Council approved unanimously. Item will be revisited on December agenda if extension is requested. 6. Discussion of New York City Ballet event and budget for this event The board discussed possible locations for the event - The Colony High School is the most likely. Member Long-Manuel discussed information that had previously been forwarded to board members regarding logistics and cost. She said there may be an option to reduce the cost by using fewer dancers. Questions were raised as to what sort of technical rider would be involved; Member Long-Manuel will contact Tom Gold about this. Mayor will be contacted to look into availability of high school. The board discussed possible promotion through local radio stations. The board agreed to do whatever possible to move forward with this project. 7. Discussion of the Cultural Arts Board purchasing a portable performance floor for use by all city arts groups Chair Whitmore proposed a recommendation to City council to have the Parks and Recreation department budget for getting a portable floor, and asking that the CAB be involved in selecting the specifications. Liaison Margolis will draft a letter to Dale Cheatham regarding this matter. 8. Discussion of formation of a symphony in The Colony Member Long-Manuel discussed encouraging local orchestra teachers to begin the process of developing a symphony, with the CAB to initiate the organization. Member Shailer questioned where the symphony would rehearse and perform. Chair Whitmore said that there is no existing facility for housing a symphony, but if and when an arts facility is built, a symphony will form.
