HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/14/1981 Parks Board I CITY OF THE COLONY DENTON COUNTY, TEXAS JANUARY 14, 1981 A REGUALR SESSION of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order with the following members present: Richard Frohardt Richard Haas Earl Brantley Barbara Sanchez Chairman Member Member Member ALTERNATE vince Ashman with Member Diane Kovar absent. Rick Herold, Director of Parks and Recreation and Tom Hart, City Manager were present. I. MINUTES The minutes of December 10th were approved as read. II. CITIZEN'S INPUT No citizens were present. I III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. 1;hnter Magic The Winter Magic program was released the last of December. Mr. Herold gave a summary of the response and growth of the different programs saying that we had waiting lists for many of the programs. He thanked Alpha Tau Gamma of Beta Sigma Phi for the community Christmas tree. He also gave thanks to Mr. I.R. Bradburry for putting in a sidewalk at Peter's Colony School. Due to this Mr. David Spence gave his okay for using the gym for our programs. Mr. Herold suggested that we may ask City Employee's to help as instructors of these programs in the summer and therefore eliminate some of the expense. B. GRANT UPDATE Rick Herold talked with Hershal and Victor of Schrickel, Rollins Association and we should have reports back at the end of January. Chairman Frohardt emphasized the need to have them back for the Board Members. I Rick told Member Brantley that the plats were in for Park platting. There followed a general discussion on l)ricinq and ideas on movies to be shown. Mr. Herold suggested having outdoor movies like the outdoor concerts they held last summer. D. Incoming Phone Calls In accordance with Member Haas request, Mr. Herold gave a brief report on the incoming phone calls. Chairman Frohardt said that he had complaints about not being able to qet information from Parr;.:; and I~ccreati()n due to the people not beinq available. Member Sanchez suggested the possibility of havinq volunteers from organizations in The Colony to help answer the phones. Mr. Hart suggested that Rick write a letter requesting a full-time employee showing justifications. V. CORRESPONDENCE Chairman Frohardt informed the Board that Member Diane Kovar had resigned from the Board. There was a ~eneral discussion on recommendations for new Doar"d members and what qualifications they should meet. VI. OLD BUSINESS A. Update from Chairman on North 2olony Park This was tabled at this time. B. Other Century 21, Lake Country Realtors, are going to help sponcer a children's Olympics. The Colony Flea Market Chili Cook-off is returning in April. Member Sanchez asked if the "Fundays"l'lere a school service. She suggested running the movies on the same hours that school runs and offering "Ne''''' Games" with the help of students from North Texas State University. Students would receive a credit for this. VII. NEW BUSINESS A. Building Problems Chairman Frohardt brought before the Board the problem ~I I I I VII I I NEW BUSINESS A. Building Problems of space and sites to hold Parks and Recreation Functions. There was a general discussion on the type of building, modular, etc., and the fact that we could rent it to other organizations. Mr. Hart said that he had looked into three other options concerning a building; the possibility of Fox & Jacobs building us a duplex shell, renting from one of the shopping centers and a modular building with the approximate cost of $20. to $23. dollars per square foot. He said that he would report back when he had heard from Fox & Jacobs. Member Haas said, after a general discussion, that we should present a package to the City Council. B. Park Names There was a general discussion of procedures on how to name the four new park sites in our system. Mr. Hart suggested that we contact community organizations and have a contest on naming these parks. He also suggested contacting the elementary schools and having an essay written by the children on naming the parks. The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 p.m.
