Citizen Input
Christi VerMilyea-Burns spoke to the board about working on The Colony history
project. She discussed using the Chamber of Commerce office as a "Visitor's Center" for
display of local history exhibits. She also discussed putting together a media packet to
help to put The Colony "on the map," and that the state of Texas has a well-funded
program for promoting Texas to other states. Ms. VerMilyea-Burns is working on a
proposal with the City Council to put these plans into action and she wanted to make the
Cultural Arts Board aware of it.
Christi Martin of 5604 Longhorn Drive informed the board about the Vibrant Dream kids
camp that was held at the Lakeside Arts Center the third and fourth weekend in July. Ms.
Martin reported that the facility was not large enough - that people were turned away (50
children took part in the camp).
Ms. Martin also expressed her concerns about the Cultural Arts Board combining with a
Special Events board, that it would result in a loss of concentration on cultural arts and
fine arts.
Ms. Martin also discussed that the Lakeside Arts Foundation has funds which are
dedicated to putting toward an arts facility, so those funds are now in a "holding pattern".
Ms. Joan L. Sveinsson, Director of The Colony Public Library, was also in attendance.

Discussion and drafting of Cultural Arts Board Strategic Plan.
The board drafted a mission statement to present to the City Council after approval by the
City Manager and the City Attorney. The drafted statement is as follows:
The Cultural Arts Board is charged with encouraging the development of, an appreciation for,
and participation in the arts and humanities in the City of The Colony.
This includes promoting the performing arts, visual arts, literature and local culture and
heritage; and the nurturing oflocal artists, performers, historians, writer, artisans, etc.
The Cultural Arts Board shall manage and distribute all applicable and appropriate funding
designated for the arts by the City of The Colony.
3. Discussion of specific ideas to propose for possible funding.
Ideas were discussed by the board for a children's event. Chairman Whitmore suggested
hiring a name artist such as Eddie Coker, a singer/entertainer for children. Other ideas
proposed included Ballet Magnificat,a ballet company and the Missoula Children's
Theater, a theater company for kids that involves local kids in the production.
Locations proposed included the amphitheatre, the 5-star facility, and the high school.
February was decided on as a proposed time for a first event. It was also decided that, if
possible, the first event should be a performance by Eddie Coker. Promotion for the
Cultural Arts Board and the board's upcoming events would feature heavily as part of the
event.
The meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
