HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/15/06 Cultural Arts I CITY OF THE COLONY DENTON COUNTY, TEXAS MINUTES OF THE CULTURAL ARTS BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY July 15, 2006 A REGULAR SESSION of the Cultural Arts Board of the City of The Colony was called to order by Chair Whitmore at 9:22 a.m. Present: Neale Whitmore Cynthia Shailer Amy Long-Manuel Joan Lux Place 3 Place 4 Place 7 Place 5 Absent: Cyndi Parker Dick Ledesma Place 1 Place 2 I 1. Citizen Input None. 2. Minutes Consideration of approval of the minutes ofthe Cultural Arts Board meeting held June 17,2006 The minutes were approved as presented 3. Discussion of possible upcoming arts events Member Shailer that Ballet Plus would be holding auditions for 2 scholarships. 4. Discussion of Cultural Arts Board's purpose, goals The board agreed to put together ideas for a mission statement in writing to bring to the City Council (after approval from the City Manager and the City Attorney). I Member Lux proposed having a special session to discuss the mission statement in detail. The board agreed to hold a special session on July 261\ from 1-4pm in the Library Conference Room. Ideas for CAB-sponsored arts events will also be discussed as part of the special session. 5. A summary of the Council Retreat Member Shailer reported that all arts matters were tabled at the City Council retreat. 6. A summary of Chairman Neale Whitmore's meeting with the Mayor Chairman Whitmore said that Mayor John Dillard would like to see the Cultural Arts Board bringing particular event ideas to the City Council. Mayor Dillard will support using a portion of the Hotel Occupancy Tax toward CAB sponsored events. Mayor Dillard also said that a short-term lease of an empty area building might be an option. Chairman Whitmore said that Mayor Dillard would like to see an event happen by the end of the calendar year. Suggestions were made for possible events, including a "kid-friendly" event and using a name artist. Chairman Whitmore also reported that Mayor Dillard felt that buying the Lakeside Arts Center building from the county was not a good city investment, since it is poorly constructed. 7. Discussion of potential new members for the Arts Board Board discussed possibilities for new members and agreed to come up with more ideas for people to encourage to apply for openings in board. Names mentioned were Nancy Dillard and Linda Bayliss. 8. Discussion of member absenteeism and action to follow Liaison Margolis informed the board that members with excessive absenteeism who have not resigned needed to be brought up before City Council to be removed from the board. Member Lux motioned to recommend the removal of members Dick Ledesma and Cyndi Parker to the City Council. Member Long-Manuel seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously.
