HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/23/2006 Library I I I MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY March 23, 2006 A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Bullard at 7:10 p.m. Present: Sandi Gehrke James Althaus Lorraine Clark Jayme Skelton Wayne Bullard Sue Parks Joan Sveinsson Jo Chantrill Place 1 Place 3 Place 4 Place 5 Place 6 Place 7 Library Director Library Secretary Absent: Diana Kruzich 1. Citizens Input. None. 2. Minutes: Consideration and approval of minutes of the board meeting held February 23, 2006. The minutes were approved as presented. 3. Library Director's Report: a. Status report re: operations. Director Sveinsson reported that staff is close to making a final decision on the selection of reservation and print management software for the public access network; some additional evaluation by IT staff is needed to finalize the selection. The Library's email server has crashed; IT is working to restore service and files. Director Sveinsson and Technical Services Librarian Herzig will attend the Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Houston April 25 - 28th. Technical Services Librarian Herzig applied for, and has been awarded, a stipend from the Automation and Technology Round Table to offset some of the expense incurred in attending the Conference and the TLA Assembly in July. The router for public wireless access drops connection frequently, requiring either Library or IT staff to get a ladder to climb up to cycle the power. Facilities Maintenance is arranging for a switch to be installed in Adult & Outreach Services Librarian Rael's office to allow staff to cycle the power easily and efficiently. Place 2 (personal) National Library Week will be celebrated April 4_Sth; a puppet show for preschoolers will be held on Tuesday, A~ril 4th at 10 a.m. and a puppet show for adults will be held on Wednesday, April 5 hat 7 p.m. Director Sveinsson will host a tour for a group of Board members and staff from the Crowley Library on Saturday, April 15th. Youth Services Librarian Snyder will host tours of classes from Camey Elementary on April 18th. Director Sveinsson and Member Parks will attend the North Texas Regional Library System Assembly on April 18th. The Library's budget projections for the current fiscal year and budget requests for next fiscal year are due to Finance on Friday, April 21 st. The annual Mother/Daughter Tea will be held on Saturday, April 29th. b. Status report re: Tutor.com service. Director Sveinsson will promote the Live Homework Help service and other Library programs and services at the B.B. Owen Elementary School Carnival on Saturday, March 25th. Chair Bullard and Director Sveinsson are working on a grant proposal to submit to the Co-Serv Charitable Foundation to fund the Tutor.com Live Homework Help service. Director Sveinsson is acquiring letters of support for the grant application. c. Status report re: grants. See b. above. d. North Texas Regional Library System focus group meeting. Director Sveinsson reviewed the Texas Public Library Standards implementation checklist which she submitted to NTRLS in preparation for the focus group meeting. She also reviewed the topics discussed by the focus group; the emphasis was on the support needed from NTRLS in the future to serve the needs of the member libraries and their communities. e. Update re: Friends of the Library activities. The annual meeting of the Friends of the Library will be held on Saturday, April 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will be catered by Amore Pasta & Pizza Restaurant. There also will be a brief Foundation meeting after the annual meeting. The next Library Board meeting will be held on April 20th.
