MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD
OF THE
CITY OF THE COLONY
December 1, 2005
A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called
to order by Chair Bullard at 7:16 p.m.

2. Minutes.
Consideration and approval of minutes of the board meeting held October 27,2005.
The minutes were approved as presented.
3. Review of Library policies.
Director Sveinsson distributed copies of the policies as reviewed and/or revised over
the past two years.
4. Library Director's Report:
a. Status report re: operations.
Staff is still working closely with EOS, Inc., to resolve the remaining issues with the
new integrated library automation system.
Adjustments have been made to the librarian staffing schedule and temp librarians
have been scheduled to cover the shortage due to the death in the immediate family
of one of the librarian staff.
The Library is holding a "Name the Tiger" Contest, open to children ages 2-12 to
name the tiger featured on the Friends of the Library book bags. The winner will be
announced on December 16th. Reference Librarian Kate Margolis came up with
the idea for the contest and has worked with the rest of the staff to promote it. The
Friends of the Library will donate a book bag, which will be part of the prize for the
winner.
The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the "Leadership The Colony" program;
Director Sveinsson is assisting in the December ih presentation on the history of
The Colony. During the leadership class visit to the Library, she will be sharing
information regarding the local history materials in the Library's collection. She has
also arranged for the group to tour the historical Bridges Cemetery.
Director Sveinsson will promote Library services at a booth at the Holiday Expo on
December 3rd.
Director Sveinsson will be on vacation from Dec. 22nd - Jan. 9th.
b. Status report re: Tutor.com service.
The Library has successfully launched the new Live Homework Help service from
Tutor.com that links a student with a tutor via an online classroom. This service is
accessible from the Library's public access computers, as well as remotely via a link
from the Library's website. Core academic assistance in math, science, social
studies and English for grades 4-12 and introductory college courses is available
from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. 7 days a week. Live Homework Help en Espanol provides
the same service for core academic assistance in math and science for grades 4-12
from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
c. Status report re: grants.
None.
d. Update re: Friends of the Library activities.
The next book sale will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3rd; the Pictures with Santa will
also be held that afternoon, with entertainment provided by the Fiddle Rascals.
The next meeting will be held on January 26, 2006, at 7:00 p.m.
