PERMANENT LANE MARKINGS (TRAFFIG BUTTONS)
INSTALLATION STANDARDS & SPECIFICATIONS
The purpose of this standard is to describe the typical layout and
installation of permanent lane markers (traffic buttons) used by the City
of The Colony. These marking standards are designated by number or letter
types. Numerical designation (i.e. TYPE l, TYPE 2, etc.) ia used to denote
markings separating lanes of traffic moving in the same direction and are
white markings. Alphabetical designation (i.e. TYPE A, TYPE B, etc.) is
used to denote markings separating lanes of traffic moving in opposing
directions. Therefore, any street section with pavement markings can be
fully .described by a TYPE number and/or letter combination.
Lane lines and center lines will utilize.the small, four (4") inch buttons
only, unless otherwise stated. The two types of markers shall be:
A. Four (4") inch diameter by ll/16" height, circular marker (SDHPT Item
No. 676).
B. Four (4") inch square, beveled-edge, marker (SDHPT Item No. 674).
These markers may be described as non-reflectorized or mono-directional or
bi-directional reflective markers.
The following describes the types of layouts as designated in these
standards. Drawings of each type are included.
TYPE 1: is a skipped white lane line normally used on streets having four
or more lanes. The normal stripe/skip cycle of 15'/25' is used
with the buttons being placed on three (3') intervals. The lead
button on the six-button pattern shall be a mono-directional
reflective type with the reflector facing, the direction of
approaching traffic.
TYPE 2: consists of a single white mono-directional reflective button
place in the center of the 25-foot space where skipped white lane
lines are painted. The reflector shall face the direction of
approaching traffic.
TYPE 3: consists of a single solid line of white buttons normally to
designate special lane control (RIGHT LANE MUST TURN RIGHT). The
buttons shall be spaced on four (4') foot intervals with a mono-
directional reflective button placed every twenty (20') feet, or
every five buttons, with the reflector facing the direction of
approaching traffic.
TYPE 4: consiete of e double row of white buttons to designate a left
turn bey. ' The lines of buttons shell b~ spaced on four (4')
intervele with mono-directional reflective buttons placed every
twenty (20') feet, or every five buttons, with the reflector
facing the direction of approaching trs£fic. The two lines of
buttons shall be separated by a two (2") inch space.
TYPE A: is a skipped yellow centerline used on roadways of only two lanes
of traffic. The stripe/skip cycle of 15'/25' is used with the
buttons of each six-button pattern placed on three (3') foot
intervals. A yellow bi-directional reflective button shall be
placed at one end of the pattern.
TYPE B: is a double yellow center line normally used on un-divided
roadways.of four or more lanes. A solid double row of buttons (4
inch space between the rows) shell be placed on four (4")
intervals, with a bi-directional reflective button placed every
forty (40') feet, or every 10 buttons.
TYPE C: consists of e single bi-directional reflective button placed in
the center of the 25' space where the skipped yellow centerline
is painted.
TYPE D: are markings for continuous, two-way left-turn lanes. These~
markings consist of one solid row of yellow buttons with another
row of skipped yellow line on e 15'/25' stripe/skip cycle. The:
rows of buttons are separated by s four (4") inch space.
Longitudinal spacing of'buttons are on three (3') £oot intervals
with s yellow bi-directional reflective button on both rows et
the lead button of the:stripe relative to approaching sd3ecent

The roadway surface shall be prepared by blast cleaning or surface grinding
to remove all surface contaminants including loose surface material,
chemical films and existing pavement markings. The traffic button shall be'
placed in s area completely free of any foreign material that may interfere
with adhesion of the marker.
Each traffic button shell be placed on e separate amount of epoxy adhesive
such that the button itself shall not contact the pavement surface but
