HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 87-14 CITY OF THE COLONY, TEXAS RESOLUTION NO. ~7-1~ WHEREAS, any decent society recognizes the need for special protection for its children from those who would prey upon them; and, WHEREAS, there are presently laws in force making it a crime to involve children in alcoholic beverages, sex and pornography and a special class of crime for endangering children and for assaults on children; and, WHEREAS, the problem of drug addiction among children is at least as serious a threat to our society as any other problem presently facing this nation, this state and this city; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY, TEXAS: Section 1. THAT the Legislature of the State of Texas and the Congress of the United States are hereby urged to create a special category of crime prohibiting the sale or gift of dangerous drugs to minors by adults. The Legislature is further urged to consider creating a mandatory prison sentence for any violation of this law. Section 2. This body recognizes that it has no expertise in writing criminal statutes defining terms 'or integrating this proposed law with other penal statutes of the State and of the nation; it has no desire to try to regulate the lawful practice of medicine or the administering of drugs necessary for health by a parent or medical personnel; it desires only to urge the enactment of laws to discourage those who would deal drugs to children. Section 3. The City Secretary is hereby authorized and directed to cause transmission of this Resolution to our State Representative, The Honorable Ben Campbell, our Governor, The Honorable Bill Clements, our United States Congressman, The Honorable Jim Wright, and to our President, The Honorable Ronald Reagan.
