HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 04-15 CITY OF THE COLONY RESOLUTION NO. 04-15 SUPPORT FOR DENTON COUNTY'S 2004-DENTON COUNTY BOND ELECTION WHEREAS, Denton County is one of the fastest growing counties in the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, Denton County is one of four counties designated as "Non-Attainment" for Ozone and Nitrous Oxide; and WHEREAS, On-road mobile sources are the primary polluter within the DFW region; and WHEREAS, congestion on the existing roadway system threatens to reduce everyone's quality of life; and WHEREAS, failure to address these issues on a regional scale could result in jeopardizing receipt of federal transportation dollars; and WItEREAS, the Transportation Road Improvement Program - 2004 (TRIP-04) will help to reduce congestion and improve regional mobility; and WItEREAS, Federal and State Transportation agencies can only fund one third of the needed roadways; and WHEREAS, Denton County has successfully utilized two previous bond programs to expedite the development of $800 million of critical roads within Denton County; and WHEREAS, TRIP-04 will allow Denton County to continue to respond to the transportation and economic developments needs of the County; and WItEREAS, Denton County's commitment to preparing and planning for growth by aggressively advancing roadway partnerships has allowed the County to capture limited roadway funds; and WHEREAS, the Denton County Transportation Committee, a diverse 20 member citizens group representing all areas of Denton County, reviewed and recommended the projects that make up TR1P-04; and WHEREAS, TRIP-04 identifies comprehensive county-wide transportation priorities that will further increase mobility within the County and Metropolitan region; and WHEREAS, funding within the TRIP-04 has been equitably distributed throughout Denton County; and WHEREAS; the 44 roadway projects in TRIP-04 represents active partnerships between Denton County, State, local and private entities; and WItEREAS, TRIP-04 was developed in close cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation and the North Central Texas Council of Governments; and WHEREAS, the $186,970,000 in TRIP-04 is estimated to generate nearly $1 Billion in roadway improvements; and WHEREAS, the $17,900,000 in the Denton County bond election represents remodeling, refurbishing and building County facilities; and WHEREAS, the $2,000,000 is included to purchase elections equipment and bring Denton County into compliance with the Help America Vote Act (HAVA Act), which requires a special type of voting equipment at all polling places by 2007; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: We, The Colony City Council, hereby strongly endorse the 2004 Denton County Bond Election hereby known as "TRIP-04 & More" as submitted by the Denton Cotmty Citizen Bond Committees and approved by the Denton County Commissioners Court on March 9, 2004 and encourage the residents of Denton County to vote for its passage on May 15, 2004. ~ith~y o~o~oanY~r- ATTEST: 'C~hristie Wilson, Interim City Secretary
