A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY, TEXAS,
APPROVING THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION TO THE TEXAS
CRIMINAL JUSTICE DIVISION FOR A DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE AND EDUCATION
PROGRAM IN THE COLONY POLICE DEPARTMENT; PLEDGING PAYMENT OF THE
LOCAL SHARE OF THE COST OF THIS PROGRAM; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE
WHEREAS, the City of The Colony recognizes a need for seeking
improvement in its Police Department by expanding the Juvenile
Division; and
WHEREAS, the Texas Criminal Justice Division has indicted that
funds may be available to the City of The Colony Police Department
for financing a Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program; and
WHEREAS, the City of The Colony pledges its proportionate
share of the cost of this project, as required, if a grant is
obtained; and
WHEREAS, the City of The Colony anticipates assuming total
cost of the project at the end of Criminal Justice funding;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF THE COLONY, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the City Manager is hereby authorized an
directed to submit a grant application to the proper authorities
for assistance in the cost of implementing a Drug Abuse Resistance
Education Program in the police department.
SECTION 2. That the City of the Colony pledges its
proportionate share of the cost of this project, as required, if a
grant is obtained.
SECTION 3. That the City of the Colony anticipates assuming
total cots of this project at the end of Criminal Justice funding.
SECTION 4. That this resolution shall take effect from and
after its passage.

The allocations of funds for this grant will allow The Colony Police Department to
assign one officer to the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. This
officer will present the seventeen session D.A.R.E. curriculum dealing with problems of
drug abuse, self esteem, respect for self and others, shoplifting, vandalism, child
safety and other crime prevention topics to all sixth grade students in the schools
located in The Colony. Currently enrollment in the sixth grade is approximately 700
students. The officer will make occasional visits to all the elementary schools and
make presentations to those students. The D.A.R.E. officer will also establish a
working relationship with the school faculty and administration in these schools and
will be the liaison between these people and the police department.
