HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 93-09 CITY OF THE COLONY, TEXAS RESOLUTION NO. c~ '~7 A RESOLUTION URGING THE GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS TO ADOPT AND ENACT LEGISLATION PROVIDING CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR PERSONS WHO ABUSE AND MURDER CHILDREN, AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of The Colony, Texas, has determined that Texas is experiencing an overwhelming problem with child abuse which ultimately leads to the death of the abused child; and WHEREAS, though child abuse alone is a horrendous crime which should carry a heavy penalty, child abuse resulting in death is a crime deserving of extraordinary punishment; and WHEREAS, the Texas Penal Code does not provide for capital punishment for persons whose abuse of a child leads to the death of that young victim; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY, TEXAS: Section 1 That the City Council of the City of The Colony, Texas, urges the Texas Legislature and the Governor to enact specific legislation that will provide capital punishment for anyone who takes the life of a child if it is found that the killing occurred during the course of or following a period of physical abuse of the child by the defendant. Section 2 That this Resolution shall be and become effective immediately upon and after its adoption and approval. PASSED AND APPROVED THIS TH~ 22ND DAY OF FEBRUARY, 1993. William W.
