ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES OF THE COLONY CITY HALL
Councilman Gomez advised that in response to the Mayor's
request at a previous Budget Work Session he and Councilman Therio '--'
had been investigating the possibility of a network computer system
for City Hall. The Councilman then introduced Bill Hummel with
Hummel and Associates who gave a very informative presentation
regarding network computer systems. Mr. Hummel gave a brief
background on networking in general, stating it is the fastest
growing area of the computer industry. Mr. Hummel said it differs
from a main frame system, in that each personal computer (p.c.) is
its own entity. Mr. Hummel's presentation covered various
configurations of network systems and he explained how a system
such as this could be implemented at City Hall, by adding some new
euqipment and converting some existing p.c.'s to network machines.
Mr. Hummel fielded questions from Council and staff regarding
memory, costs~ current software compatibility, etc. He advised
that the memory depends on how big the file server is noting that
the Novell system, RAM is used to accept all information then the
hard drive sorts it on its own time. Mr. Hummel said some of the
existing software may be compatible and some of it may have to be
updated or replaced. The estimated cost for a network system for
the administrative offices at City Hall would be from $25,000 to
$32,000.
