Discuss video system for shelter Chief Plemons advised that he had spoken to the fire department, per board request and found there were no resources there for video installation. He further stated that he had spoken with IT and Facilities regarding using existing system to support the potential shelter video system. Per Chief Plemons, the estimated cost to install 4 cameras is approximately $1500. Discuss volunteer program and use of volunteers and shelter image Councilman Terre asked if there had been any issues with volunteers at the shelter. Barrington indicated there are not. Chief Plemons advised he had spoken to the city's legal representative regarding use of volunteers for offsite adoptions and special events and indicated he felt using volunteers for these type of programs might be more beneficial to both the shelter and the volunteers. Ms. Gunderson voiced her concern with potential liability and suggested volunteers be carefully selected and undergo training prior to being allowed to participate in special events unsupervised. Review first half activity reports Manager Barrington presented January - July shelter statistics for review. Councilman Terre would like the "last year" section on the report changed to "last year to date" for comparative purposes. Chief Plemons directed Barrington to create a summary page for future meetings. Discuss possible expenditures from donation account Chief Plemons directed a report be submitted reflective of donation account activity at each future meeting. Councilman Terre suggested funding the video system from the donation account. Ms. Gunderson, Dr. Darbro and Chief Plemons agreed this might be proper use of donated funds. Barrington stated that some donated funds were earmarked for specific purposes. Discuss recent events Manager Barrington reported that the shelter held its bi-monthly Save-a-Life Express Adoption Program on August 18. 18 animals were vaccinated and spayed or neutered and available for $20 through this program. Of the 18 animals selected for this program, 12 were owner surrenders which arrived at the shelter already spayed or neutered. Six of these 18 were adopted on August 18 and a total of 17 of the 18 were adopted the following week. One animal selected for this program was euthanized after over a month in the shelter. Manager Barrington reported the Bow-wow-pow-wow was held on September 8. Though, this is a PARD program, the shelter is a beneficiary of the funds raised through this event. It is estimated, the shelter will receive $1832 in donations specifically for the medical needs and care of shelter pets. Another edition of the Save-a-Life Express Adoption Program and low cost vaccination clinic is scheduled for October 13, 2012 at the shelter, reported Barrington. Discuss shelter goals/future agenda items Manager Barrington asked all members if they would like to see anything specific on the next agenda. No suggestions were made. Barrington suggested future meeting dates be set further in advance. Chief Plemons indicated this would be beneficial and allow board meetings to be put on the city calendar.
