Advisory Board Meeting
August 17, 2011
Called to order: 6:01 p.m.
Members in attendance: Wendy Gunderson, Patricia Barrington, Chris Plemons, David Terre
Members absent: Dr. Greg Darbro
Review results of recent special events
Save a Life Express Adoption: Six animals were selected to be available for adoption at this event, which was held at The
Colony Aquatic Center on August 6. Five of the six animals were adopted. Two were returned, but ultimately
readopted from the shelter.
Cinco de Mayo Low Cost Vaccination Clinic: This was held at The Colony Animal Shelter on May 7. 62 pets were seen
and 49 were vaccinated against rabies.
Upcoming events
Save a Life Express Adoption to be held at 5 Star Sports Complex on October 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. This program will
be held in conjunction with a low cost vaccination clinic. Patricia Barrington expressed concern that the pets adopted at
these offsite events are often done so impulsively, resulting in the pet being returned at a later date. She suggested that
a volunteer be asked to assist with these events so that the officer on site can counsel potential pet owners and
hopefully assist them in selecting a pet that will fit their needs and lifestyle. Wendy Gunderson offered to assist as an
adoption counselor when she is available,
Shelter renovations
A pod type storage building has replaced the two old storage units that were taken down and removed. Patricia
Barrington indicated the new storage facility is better suited for storing pet food,
The men's restroom was converted into an adoption interaction room. Patricia Barrington said that this room has been
utilized a great deal and customers seem to enjoy the opportunity to interact with potential pets in a more home like
environment. David Terre and Chris Plemons agreed that adding this room was an innovative approach to increasing pet
adoptions.
Patricia Barrington reported that the majority of the ceilings in the shelter are scheduled to be painted this week as well
as several doors.
First half activity reports
Patricia Barrington distributed activity reports for January - July 2011. She said that after examining the first half
activity, which reflected a euthanasia rate of 36%, the staff examined several aspects of operations to determine areas
they might be able to address that would decrease this rate. The adoption room, heightened media contact and
scheduling of Express Adoptions in high traffic areas are some of the things the division opted to do to try and increase
pet adoptions and decrease euthanasia. David Terre suggested the shelter contact Dr. Stewart to see if she would be
interested in holding an Express Adoption in front of her clinic.

Annual Wildlife Conference
Texas Parks and Wildlife is partnering with The Colony Animal Services to bring The Annual Wildlife Community
Conference to The Colony. The conference is open to the public and will be held on September 20, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at
The Colony Community Center. DFW Wildlife Coalition and TrueTech are two vendors who may vend the event.
Other Business
Board member Dr. Gregory Darbro is not available for meetings on Wednesday. Members present agreed to schedule
the next meeting for Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 6 p.m. in an effort to accommodate all members' schedules.
Wendy Gunderson suggested the shelter create a Facebook page specifically for the shelter to highlight shelter pets
available for adoption. Patricia Barrington and Chris Plemons agreed to check into this.
