HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Library Board - 07/25/2024 - RegularAjj THE ENY CITY OF THE COLONY 7PC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES � ci, � c►�e Ln THURSDAY, DULY 259 2024 7:00 PM The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:01 p.m. on the 25th day of July 2024 at City Hall, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke, Vice Chair Cynthia Worthen Margaret Heermans, Chair Jonita Harris Joanna Krueger Jarrett Davis Vacant Judy Ensweiler Megan Charters Karla Storm Place 1 Present Place 2 Present Place 3 Present Place 4 Present Place 5 Present Place 6 Present Place 7 N/A Council Liaison Present Staff Liaison Present Recording Secretary Present 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS Director Charters announced that the Library Board has an open board position and one person has applied. Director Charters introduced Shay Howard. She is working on her MLS at Texas Women's University and is a practicum student with The Colony Public Library this summer. 2.0 CITIZEN INPUT This portion of the meeting is to allow up to five (5) minutes per speaker with a maximum of thirty (30) minutes for items not posted on the current agenda. The board may not discuss these items, but may respond with factual data or policy information, or place the item on a future agenda. Those wishing to speak shall submit a Request Form to the board secretary. No report. 3.0 CONSENT AGENDA The Consent Agenda contains items which are routine in nature and will be acted upon in one motion. Items may be removed from this agenda for separate discussion by a board member. 3.1 Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held June 27, 2024. The Board reviewed the minutes. Motion to approve the above consent agenda item — Davis; second by Krueger; motion passed with all ayes. REGULAR SESSION; of the LIBRARY BOARD Minutes ikleeting Date: 07/25/2024 Page - 2 4.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 4.1 Discuss and receive reports regarding the progress on Library Board Goals and Projects for 2024: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues. The Board discussed Alabama HB4, which proposes to criminalize librarians for having material "harmful to minors" shelved in sections for minors. In the upcoming weeks, Director Charters will send more American Library Association legislative information to the members as it becomes available. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community activities. Director Charters and Member Gehrke volunteered at the City's Back to School Bash on Wednesday, July 171h. C. Initiate contact and work to form partnerships in the community to introduce TCPL's services and resources and to serve as an information source for the community. Love Pacs has been included in TCPL social media for community outreach and information. A resource officer from The Colony Police Department will train TCPL staff on CredibleMind mental health resources and the Take Me Home program at their next staff training in November. D. Compile evidence and anecdotal information relating to Library needs in regard to advocating and informing stakeholders about future Library space. In August, Director Charters will attend a seminar for library design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in preparation for planning and designing the upcoming library renovation. 4.2 Receive a presentation and discuss updates regarding the Library's 2024 Summer Reading Challenge. The dates for Summer Reading Challenge are June 1 S` through July 28`h. Registration for Summer Reading Challenge as of July 25th is 540 children, 109 teens, 243 adults. To date, the Library has had 1, 654 summer program attendees and 840 attendees for story times. 4.3 Receive a presentation and discuss staff updates regarding public relations events, programs, services, and community partnerships. Weekly Early Literacy Story Times are on hiatus in August; however, other August 2024 programming includes Story Time at Chick-fil-A at 10: 00 a.m. every Monday morning. Family REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD Minutes Meeting Date: 07/2-5/2024 Page - 3 activities include Creature Teacher Animal Show and Interactive Movie Family kits. Teens can prepare for the new school year during the Teen Sensory Relaxation program. Adults will have plenty of activities this coming month with Virtual Author Talks, a Mini Library Diorama kit, meetings of the Socially Savvy Squad, Landscape Design program with Denton County Master Gardeners, Legal Aid of North Texas, Multicultural Western Legends program, Spice Club Pickle Pop -Up, and a Medicare Educational Seminar. Be sure to come to the Library and pick up a Play TC! magnet for year-round access to the digital catalog. 4.4 Receive a presentation and discuss updates regarding Friends of The Colony Public Library activities. The Friends of The Colony Public Library will meet Thursday, August 8th at 6:00 p. m. in the Library Conference Room. The FOTCPL Junior Book Sale will be in the Council Chambers on Friday, August 161h from 12: 00 to 5: 00 p. m. and Saturday, August 17`h from 10: 00 a. m. to 4: 00 p. m.
