HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Library Board - 05/25/2023 - RegularJJTHF CITY OF THE COLONY 'COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2023 7:00 PM The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on the 25th day of May 2023 at City Hall, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke, Chair Place 1 Present Jan Partin Place 2 Present Margaret Heermans Place 3 Present Jonita Harris Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jarrett Davis Place 6 Present Sarah Fried, Vice Chair Place 7 Absent Judy Ensweiler Council Liaison Present Megan Charters Staff Liaison Present Karla Storm Recording Secretary Present I ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS Director Charters reminded Board members that Library Board reappointment interviews will take place on June 121h. 2 CITIZEN INPUT This portion of the meeting is to allow up to five (5) minutes per speaker with a maximum of thirty (30) minutes for items not posted on the current agenda. The board may not discuss these items, but may respond with factual data or policy information, or place the item on a future agenda. Those wishing to speak shall submit a Request Form to the board secretary. No report. 3 CONSENT AGENDA The Consent Agenda contains items which are routine in nature and will be acted upon in one motion. Items may be removed from this agenda for separate discussion by a board member. No report. 3.1 Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held March 23, 2023. The Board reviewed the minutes. Motion to approve the above consent agenda item — Heermans,- second by Davis; motion passed with all ayes. REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD Minutes \leeungy Date: n--;'_'i/ fin`; Pa Te 4 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 4.1 Discuss and receive reports regarding the progress on Library Board Goals and Projects for 2022: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues. Director Charters presented nation-wide book ban statistics for 2022 from the American Library Association. The Board also reviewed information about Texas HB 4520 that includes consequences.for educators who expose students to "harmful material. " The Library will have a display of books from the collection, curated by librarians, for Pride Month in June. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community activities. On April 22"x, Member Partin gave historical tours for Springtime at Bridges Cemetery. Members Krueger, Harris, and Partin helped with the FOTCPL Book Sale on May 19"' and 20". C. Initiate contact and work to form partnerships in the community to introduce TCPL's services and resources and to serve as an information source for the community. TCPL initiated a donation drive for Shepherd's House to run from May 161r' through May 3P. Donation requests include Uber- and Lyft gift cards, size 3 and 6 diapers, hypo -allergenic baby wipes, and feminine hygiene products. D. Compile evidence and anecdotal information relating to Library needs in regard to advocating and informing stakeholders about future Library space. On May S", Library staff toured the recently renovated Plano Harrington Public Library; this branch of the Plano Public Library system is of comparable size to the space needs. for TCPL's fixture building. Library staff had an opportunity to see all aspects of the library's design and uses, which gave some visual inspiration of possibilities for a fixture renovation at The Colony Public Library. Staff have been told by some patrons who previously attended programming at the Frisco Library that they are returning to TCPL because they prefer our programming and the friendliness of our staff. 4.2 Receive a presentation and discuss staff updates regarding new Library staff roles. Kate Margolis, TCPL Assistant Library Director — Public Services, is retiring May 31 s'. Noelle Roseberry is moving from her role as Technical Services Librarian to Digital Media Services Librarian. Dan Watkins is changing his role from Assistant Library Director — Operations to REGULAR SESSION of the LIBRARY BOARD Nliiuites NIeetiiiur Date: 05,;25 _'03 Assistant Library Director — Public Services. Julie Conlee's title will change, from Access Services Manager to Library Operations Manager. Bailey Cooper is leaving her role as Access Services Assistant to become the new Technical Services Librarian. Sana Sulaiman is moving from Youth Services Library Assistant to Adult Services Library Assistant. 4.3 Receive a presentation and discuss staff updates regarding public relations events, programs, services, and community partnerships. Director Charters reviewed events and programs, including The Colony Summer Kickoff, registration for TCPL Summer Reading Challenge, Early Literacy Story Times, Interactive Book Boxes, Summer Family Programs, Paws for Reading, Story Time with The Colony Police Department, Family Movie Matinees, StoryWalk at Ridgepoint Park, Stuffed Animal Sleepover, Summer Teen Programs, Friendship Bracelet Kits, Author Talks, NASA DART Mission presentation, Medicare Education Seminar, Online Book Club, Creativebug Crochet Kit, Spice Club, and Romantic Guitar Performance. 4.4 Receive a presentation and discuss updates regarding Friends of The Colony Public Library activities. Friends of The Colony Public Library's Spring Book Sale was Friday, May 191h and Saturday, May 201h, earning a profit of approximately $1,500.
