HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/22/04 Library Board MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF THE CITY OF THE COLONY April 22, 2004 A REGULAR SESSION of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order by Chair Kruzich at 7:05 p.m. Present: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Diana Kruzich Place 2 Jayme Skelton Place 5 Wayne Bullard Place 6 Joan Sveinsson Library Director Jo Chantrill Library Secretary Absent: James Althaus Place 3 (Medical) Lorraine Clark Place 4 (Personal) Sue Parks Place 7 (Personal Business) 1. Citizens input. None. 2. Consideration and approval of minutes of the board meeting held March 25, 2004. The minutes were approved as presented. 3. Review of Library Policies a. Discussion and consideration of revisions to the Materials Selection Policy. It was determined that further review of this policy by the members was needed before further discussion of it. It was agreed that each member would review it further and transmit suggestions to Director Sveinsson via email in preparation for discussion and consideration at the June meeting. b. Discussion and consideration of adoption of proposed Proctoring Policy. Director Sveinsson presented the policy, including the revisions suggested at the last meeting; Member Bullard moved to adopt the policy as presented. Member Skelton seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. c. Discussion and consideration of Circulation Policy Appendix: Schedule of Charges. The Board reviewed the list of charges and made recommendations for revisions. Director Sveinsson will discuss the Board's recommendations with the Library Management Team and bring the results back to the Board at the June meeting. 4. Library Director's Report: a. Status report re: operations This week, the Library is celebrating National Library Week, TV Turn-off week, and National Poetry Month. Volunteers Week. The March 2004 statistics report was discussed, as was the quarterly performance measures report. Computer usage was at an all time high in March with 3,804.user sessions logged - an increase of 53% over March of 2003 and a fiscal year-to-date increase of 32.6%. Director Sveinsson sought Board input regarding concerns expressed by some patrons about the attire of other patrons, specifically graphics on shirts. The consensus of the Board was that, as the Library is a public building, if it is legal to wear the attire in public, the Library cannot take action; the only exception would be if the attire presented a health or safety issue. Summer Reading Club sign-ups will begin on May 26th. Director Sveinsson will be on vacation May 8th through June 1st. b. Status report re: Denton County Library Funding County Judge Horn has proposed a library funding policy that would eliminate County library funding to cities with a population over 15,000. Director Sveinsson, along with representatives from the other libraries, attended Commissioners Court to request that the funding not be eliminated. The Denton County Library Advisory Board has been asked to develop a reduced funding plan to present at next Tuesday's Commissioners Court meeting. In the meantime, library supporters are spreading the word and asking citizens to contact their Commissioners and the County Judge to express their support for continued County library funding. c. Status report re: grants Director Sveinsson has been meeting and corresponding with a volunteer __ who has volunteered to write grant applications on behalf of the library. d. Update re: Friends of the Library activities The annual meeting of the Friends of The Colony Public Library was held on April 17th. The entertainment portion of the evening was a book jeopardy game suggested in a response to the membership survey and developed by Director Sveinsson with assistance from Member Bullard. The Used Book Sale and Library Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, June 5t~, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at The Colony Wal-Mart Supercenter. The annual "All you can eat Pancakes" at McDonald's fund raiser will be held the same day at McDonald's from 7:00 - 10:00 a.m. The annual Mother-Daughter Tea, sponsored by FOTCPL, will be held on Saturday, May 1s~ at 2:00 pm. A continuing education class for day care and preschool teachers, "Sun Safety Awareness" will be held on May 13~ from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. e. Long range planning: No report. It was the consensus of the Board to not meet in May as Director Sveinsson will be on vacation. The next Library Board meeting will be held on June 17th.
