LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
- - April 27, 2017
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:02 p.m. on the 27th day of April 2017, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main
Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call:

With five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were
addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND
PROCLAMATIONS:

2.0 1 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held March 23, 2017
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item —Gehrke; second by Heermans;
motion passed with all ayes
3.0 1 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress on the following Library Board goals
and projects for 2017:
A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues
Director Sveinsson provided information about the impact of the potential loss of
funding for such state-wide services as the TEXshare database program should the
federal funding be reduced or eliminated. The proposed elimination of Institute for
Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the funding it provides would seriously
impact such services. Director Sveinsson will forward updates to the Board
regarding legislative proposals involving library funding.

B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community
activities
Members Krueger, Gehrke, and Hebb volunteered at the Spring Tea.
C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's
services and resources
No report.
3.2 Receive and discuss staff report regarding Texas Library Association Annual
Conference
Director Sveinsson presented a brief overview of the highlights of the Texas Library
Association Annual Conference and some of the sessions she and Technical Services
Librarian :Megan Charters attended.
3.3 Introduction of new Youth Services Librarian
Youth Services Librarian Jacquelyn Yu was introduced; she joined the staff on April
25`x'.
3.4 Receive and discuss update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
FOTCPL PRESENTS! Tea Party, Saturday, April 22: There were 40 attendees.
Everyone had fun playing "pin the smile on the Cheshire cat"; enjoying tea, lemonade
and refreshments. FOTCPI, members who assisted: Sandi Gehrke, Judy Hebb, and
Joanna Krueger (the very talented "Mad Ilatter").
FOTCPL PRESENTS! Annual Fun Night & Membership Meeting featuring guest
speaker author James William Peercy, Saturday, April 29: Social begins at 6:30
p.m.; meeting begins at 7, followed by guest speaker author James William Peercy. The
event is open to all. There will be door prizes and refreshments - and fun!
3.5 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events, programs, and
community partnerships:
AARP Tax Help: From February 1 through April 12, AARP Foundation Tax Help
volunteers helped a total of 184 people prepare and submit their Federal tax returns.
There were a total of 10 sessions. The April 12 session was cancelled due to AARP tax
preparation site being down; preparers scheduled two additional sessions at the
Community Center and TCPL staff compiled and distributed lists of alternative
sites/dates/times.
Computer Classes: the Intermediate Word 2010 and Intermediate Excel 2010 classes
each drew 5 participants.
Summer Reading Club Registration: Registration will begin May 16, both in the
Library and online.
Summer Coding Camp Registration: Coding Camp is for children in grades 3-5 and
will be held daily Tuesday, June 13, Thursday, June 15, and Friday, June 16 from 2-4 -
p.m. Advance registration is required, space is limited. Registration is by email to
library@thecolonypl.org or by phone to 972-625-1900 ext. 3. Coding Camp is
sponsored by FOTCPI..

Gaming Tournament: Participants may compete for first place in an action -packed
tournament of Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U Gaming System. This event is hosted by
_ TCPL's Teen Anime Club and sponsored by Friends of The Colony Public Library.
Doors open at 1 p.m. for player registration; there is a $3 cash entry fee for those
wishing to play in the tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday, May 6 at
1:30 p.m. and run until approximately 4:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room. There will be
a prize for the first and second place winners! Refreshments will be available for cash
purchase. Proceeds benefit TCPL's teen programs and activities.
Bridges Cemetery Open House: On Monday, May 29, members of The Colony Public
Library Local History Committee will open Bridges Cemetery to the public from 10
a.m.-noon and will answer questions about The Colony's history. Bridges Cemetery is
located at the NW corner of Morningstar and Chesapeake.
