HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/23/2017 LibraryMarch 23,2017 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES March 23, 2017 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:14 p.m. on the 23rd day of March 2017, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin, Chair Place 2 Absent Margaret Heermans Place 3 Present Judith Hebb, Vice -Chair Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Place 7 Vacant Brian Wade Council Liaison Absent Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present With five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input- Angela Barris, TWU SLIS student working on her MLIS degree, attended the meeting as part of her practicum experience at TCPL. 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held January 26, 2017 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with corrections—Heermans; second by Krueger; motion passed with all ayes REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress on the following Library Board goals and projects for 2017: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues Board members were encouraged to continue to check their city email accounts frequently for information forwarded by staff re: critical legislative issues on both the federal and state level. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at school and community activities Member Gehrke volunteered to assist staff at the TCPI. booth at Camey Elementary School's Literacy Night on May 4. Staff will also need assistance at the TCPI, booth at Stewart's Creek Elementary School's Carnival on the evening of May 19. 1 March 23,2017 C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPVs services and resources No report. 3.2 Receive and discuss update regarding Friends of the Library activities: FOTCPL PRESENTS! 9ch Annual Great Magazine Swap, March 11: 60 people attended the Magazine Swap. FOTCPL members/officers Mac Caldwell and Sandi Gehrke greeted visitors to the event and kept the display of magazines organized. FOTCPL PRESENTS! Tea Party, Saturday, April 22: Registration opens Tuesday, April 4 at 10 a.m. for the FOT(:PL PRESENTS! "Alice in Wonderland" Tea Party to be held on Saturday April 22, from 2-3:30 p.m. Registration is in person at the circulation desk; tickets are $5 per person. Event participants should be at least 4 years old; children under the age of 9 must be accompanied at all times by a caregiver age 12 or older while at the Library. Theme costumes are encouraged. Registration is limited; early registration recommended FOTCPL PRESENTS! Annual Fun Night & Membership Meeting featuring guest speaker author James William Peercy, April 29: Social begins at 6:30 p.m.; meeting begins at 7, followed by guest speaker author James William Peercy. The event is open to all. There will be door prizes and refreshments - and fun! Call 972-624-3184 or check the FOTCPL page at thecolonypl.org for details. To donate a door prize, call Joan at the above number or email libr@aCg becolonypl.org.-- 3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events, programs, and community partnerships: AARP Tax Help: From February 1 through March 22, AARP Foundation Tax Help volunteers helped a total of 125 people prepare and submit their Federal tax returns. TCPL will continue to host this valuable service on Wednesday evenings from 4-8 p.m. through April 12. Why Your Story Matters (Local History Committee event): There were 13 participants for this event. Thatcher Freund, journalist and memoir writer, talked about the importance of stories in our lives, both to ourselves and to the culture we live in, and why it matters so much that we preserve them. This program was presented by The Colony Public Library's Local History Committee in celebration of the Library's 35th anniversary. Pok6mon League: Pokemon League will be. held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month. Participants can play Pokemon Go, the trading card game, or the video games on their Nintendo 3DS! This officially sanctioned league event is targeted for middle school and high school ages, but is open to all. Participants can meet, trade with, and battle other trainers! Children under 9 years old must be accompanied at all times by a caregiver age 12 or older. "Bag of Books" Sale: This promotion will continue to the end of the month. Spanish Language Home Buyers Seminar: There were no attendees for this free Spanish language workshop offered on the evening of March 7. March 23,2017 Spring Break Coding Camp: Three children attended the Spring Break Coding Camp held daily Tuesday, March 14 through Friday, March 17 from 2-4 p.m.; this class was for children in grades 3-5. Computer Classes: There were 5 participants each in the Basics of Microsoft Word 2010 and Basic of Microsoft Excel 2010 classes.
