HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/25/2016 LIB August 25,2016 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES August 25,2016 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:08 p.m. on the 25th day of August 2016, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas,with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin, Chair Place 2 Present Place 3 Vacant Judith Ilebb, Vice-Chair Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo Place 7 Absent Brian Wade Council Liaison Absent Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present With five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: [1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input-None 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held July 28, 2016 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item - Gehrke; second by Hebb; motion passed with all ayes 3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Tour of various areas of the Library to gain greater understanding of current services, improvements, planned changes, and needs No tour this month. 3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for 2016: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues No report. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community activities Members Martin and Gehrke stuffed folders to be given out at The Colony Back 2 School Bash; Member Gehrke also helped at the TCPL booth at the Bash. Member __ _ - Gehrke assisted Director Sveinsson in distributing TCPL information at the LISD Back to School Fair and at two Hicks Elementary School events. Members Gehrke and Hebb staffed the Jazzed ticket sales table in the Library; Member Hebb noted 1 August 25,2016 that she had the opportunity to observe the circulation staff at work during those times and reported that she was very impressed by their professional, yet friendly customer service. C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's services and resources Member Martin attended the Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremonies for Rock & Brews and Door 2 Door School Shuttle. Member Gehrke took TCPL publicity materials to be included in newcomer bags and assisted in stuffing the bags; the bags are distributed through The Colony Utility Billing Customer Services. 3.3 Discussion of Library Board meeting schedule No discussion. 3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: Jazzed About The Library Benefit 2016: More tickets were sold this year than last year and there was a slightly larger turnout. One big auction item was sold and all but two of the smaller items sold. The Casino was very popular and the venue layout was better. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Little Free Libraries: On August 14, it was reported that the Ridgepointe Park LFL had been damaged. The Plexiglas window in the door had been broken. Director Sveinsson removed the books, put a temporary cover over the opening, posted a sign, and notified Parks Manager Jackie Kopsa regarding needed repairs. On August 15, PARD staff completed the repairs; on August 16, the books were returned and the LFL was back in business. FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors: To date, eighteen authors have signed up for this event which will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, at the Library. 3.5 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: LISD Back to School Fair: Member Gehrke and Director Sveinsson issued 35 TCPL cards and provided TCPL information to over 750 contacts. The Colony Back 2 School Bash: Member Gehrke helped during the event; 479 folders were given to students, 1,143 contacts were made, and twenty-three library cards were issued. Teen Pizza Party: Eighteen teens attended the party to eat pizza, play games and socialize. Palio's Pizza Café of The Colony donated the pizza. The Teen Anime Club members sold snacks and the winners'of the Teen Art Contest were announced. The 1st place winner was Ivan Gafica and 2nd place winner was Ariah Lentz. Summer Reading Club: To date, there were a total of 644 registrations, a total of 6,407 books have been logged by the Itty Bitties, Kiddos, and Adults, and a total of 1,363 hours read were logged by the teens. A complete report will be presented at the September meeting. Summer Library Olympics: There were 40 participants for this event. Games were played and prizes were awarded. STEAManiacs: This come-and-go program will be held every Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m. and offers elementary school-age children in grades K-5 the opportunity to 2 • August 25,2016 explore a little bit about all things STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Activities will include hands-on experiments, creating with Snap Circuits, _ _ _ building with K*Nex, sharpening math skills with coding activities, and investigatiing fascinating ways to explore innovative literacy. Children under 9 years old must be accompanied at all times by a caregiver age 12 or older. Pokémon Go: Battle Royale: Contestants are invited to come to TCPL's Pokémon GOO Gym for an epic game battle on Wednesday, September 7, 6:30-7:30 p.m. When the hour is up, the Gym Leader will be awarded the Codex Badge. Each participant must bring his/her own smartphone with Pokémon GOO installed. Due to restrictions within the game, participants must already be on Pokémon GOO level 5 or higher to challenge others in a gym battle. Children under 9 years old must be accompanied at all times by a caregiver age 12 or older. Minecraft Party: The third annual MineCraft Party will be held Saturday, September 10 from 2-4 p.m. All ages are welcome to come celebrate everything MineCraft with crafts and games. Continuing Education Class: This class for daycare and preschool teachers will be held Thursday, September 15, at 7 p.m. Instructor Amy Anderson, Speech-Language Pathologist, from North Central Texas ECI will teach Baby-Early Childhood Sign Language: Intermediate Level. Participants who complete the class will earn 2.0 hours of CE credit. Pre-registration is required; the $5 per person reservation fee is refundable on completion of the class. Registration opened August 23. Registration for Back to Hogwarts Bash: Online registration begins Tuesday, September 20 at thecolonypl.org; registration is limited, but the tickets are free. -- - --- Participants are invited to experience the world of Harry Potter on Saturday, October 15, from 6-9 p.m. They will be sorted into Houses, take Hogwarts classes and participate in a Harry Potter trivia quiz. Costumes encouraged! Computer Classes: The September classes include Beginning Word 2010 on Friday September 23 from 2-4 p.m. and Basic Computer Class on Saturday, September 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.
