HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/23/2016 LIBJune 23, 2016 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES -- JUNE 23, 2016 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 8:18 p.m. on the 23rd day of June 2016, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin, Vice -Chair Place 2 Absent Frederick Rushing Place 3 Absent Judith Hebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Absent Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo, Chair Place 7 Present Brian Wade Council Liaison Absent Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present With four board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input — None 2.0 1 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held May 26, 2016 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item - Hebb; second by Kelly; motion passed with all ayes 3.0 1 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Tour of various areas of the Library to gain greater understanding of current services, improvements, planned changes, and needs No tour. 3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for 2016: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues No report. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community activities Members Gehrke and Hebb participated in the Little Free Library celebrations on June 13, 2016. 1 June 23, 2016 C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPUs services and resources Chair Agudelo reported on efforts to line up sponsors for Jazzed About The Library Benefit 2016 and to arrange for FOTCPI. to host a Chamber mixer in 2017. 3.3 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Collection Development Policy Motion to approve the revised Collection Development Policy as presented; Hebb; second by Gehrke; motion passed with all ayes. 3.4 Annual review, discussion, and ratification of the schedule of fees staff submitted to city administration for FY 16-17 Motion that the Board ratify the staff's recommended revisions to the schedule offees as submitted to city administration and as presented; Gehrke; second by Hebb; motion passed with all ayes. 3.5 Receive and discuss staff report re: staffing changes Director Sveinsson announced that the new Youth Services Librarian, Anna Darst, has been hired and will start on Tuesday, June 28, 2016. 3.6 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities "Bag of Books" Sale! As of midday June 23, 11 "Bag of Books" have been sold. Jazzed About The Library Benefit 2016: This event will be held on August 13 at the Cascades Event Center; the theme is 40s jazz. The City is providing requested funding in support of the event. Advance tickets are available for purchase at discounted rates online at thecolonypl.org and on the Friends Facebook. The advertising campaign includes Dallas Observer (over I million readers) and Family eGuide. In -library ticket sale dates/times are planned to correspond with TCPL events: Saturday, June 25, 1:304 p.m.; Thursday, July 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Saturday, July 23, 1:30-4 p.m.; Friday, August 5, 10 a.m.-noon; and Saturday, August 6, 12:30-3:30 p.m. FOTCPL officers are seeking corporate and business sponsors for 2016, and at the same time, they are working on exciting plans for 2017. Little Free Libraries: Celebrations for the Diana Kruzich Memorial Little Free Libraries of The Colony were held Sunday, June 13, at Bill Allen Memorial Park and Lions Club Park. Although FOTCPI. officers, staff, and supporters arrived prepared for the celebration at Ridgepointe Park, the event was rained out; that celebration will be re- scheduled soon. June 16 and July 21 FOTCPL PRESENTS/ Family Nights: Twenty-two children and parents enjoyed magician, puppeteer, and ventriloquist Brett Roberts' presentation "Heroes Around the World"; he performed magic tricks, talked about real life heroes, and promoted use of the library. The July 21, 2016 Family Fun Night will feature magician James Wand. 3.7 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: 2 June 23, 2016 Summer Reading Club Registration and Programs: As of midday June 23, a total of 466 people have registered, 1,400 books have been logged by the Itty Bitties, Kiddos, and Adults, and 196 hours of reading have been logged by the Teens. The Wednesday Summer Reading Programs drew 73 children for Critterman on June 8; 42 children for Magician Brett Roberts on June 15; and 31 children for the Pipdilly's on June 22. Next week's program will be an improve event with Move Your Tale. Fired Up About Reading: To date, a total of seventy-one participants have attended Fired Up about Reading: an average twenty-four per event. Fired Up will continue throughout June and July. Robotics Camp: The June 17 session had ten participants. This event is for children entering grades 3-5; registration is required and is limited due to equipment availability. The second session for June will be held on the 24th. Registration is underway for the July 13 and 22 sessions. Teen Art Contest: Eight participants at the event created pieces that are now on display in the Teen area. Ballots are available and will be tallied prior to the Teen Pizza Party at which a prize will be awarded to the teen who created the winning art piece. Button Making for Teens: This button making extravaganza drew four participants. Family LEGOmania: Ages 4 and up are invited to come and build with LEGO's on Saturday June 25 and Saturday July 23 from 2-3:30 p.m. Creations will be displayed in the Library after each event. 3.8 Review list of July library programs The Board reviewed the list.
