CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
MAY 26, 2016
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:07 p.m. on the 26th day of May 2016, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main
Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call:

With five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were
addressed:
1.0 1ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND
PROCLAMATIONS:

2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held April 28, 2016
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item - Rushing; second by Kelly;
motion passed with all ayes
3.0 1 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Tour of various areas of the Library to gain greater understanding of current
services, improvements, planned changes, and needs.
No tour this month.
3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for
2016:
A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues
No report.
B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community
activities
No report.

C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's -- --
services and resources
Member Martin spoke with representatives at Nebraska Furniture Mart regarding
TCPL representation at future promotional events and received little feedback from
them.
3.3 Review of Collection Development Policy.
The Board conducted an initial review of the Collection Development Policy. Director
Sveinsson will review it with staff and bring back a final draft for consideration at the
June meeting.
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
FOTCPL Annual Meeting: This event was held Saturday, April 30, 6 p.m. at Palio's
Pizza Cafe. Guest speaker was author Bettina Restrepo whose 2011 publication 111ega1
is on the Texas Library Association Young Adult Round Table 2016 Spirit of Texas
High School Reading List. Eight members attended and officers were elected.
President: Wayne Bullard; VP Ways & Means: Mike Cicutto; VP Membership: Mac
Caldwell; Treasurer: Cary Cox; Secretary: Sandi Gehrke.
"Bag of Books" Sale: Bag of Books sale is the June fundraiser.
Jazzed About The Library Benefit 2016: This event will be held August 13 at the
Cascades event center and the theme is 40s Jazz. The City is providing requested
funding. The FOTCPL officers are seeking corporate and business sponsors and at the
same time are working on exciting plans for 2017.
Little Free Libraries: Director Sveinsson provided information about social media
response to the Diana Kruzich Memorial Little Free Libraries of The Colony, as well as
other publicity about the LFLs. Photos posted on the Friends Facebook on 4-20-16 have
been very popular: as of today, Brandy Garrison Daley's photo of the LFI, at Bill Allen
Memorial Park has reached 3,284 people and Denise Godinez's photo of the LFL at
Ridgepointe Park has reached 667 people. Director Sveinsson's column in 5-15-16
issue of The Colony Courier -Leader provided background information on the project;
the City's 5-18-16 eNewsletter carried photos of the LFLs and linked to Director
Sveinsson's column. Andrew Deister's photo of children enjoying the L`FL at
Ridgepointe was shared via the City's Twitter. Member Martin suggested that the
planned park at The Boat House as a future location for another LFL. There was also a
suggestion to distribute Jazzed publicity via the LFLs.
FOTCPL PRESENTS! Family Night: FOTCPI, is again sponsoring two evening
family programs this summer; the first will feature magician, puppeteer, and
ventriloquist Brett Roberts on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m.
3.5 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Gaming Tournament: The Teen Anime Club's Smash Tournament brought in 28
participants.
Summer Reading Club Registration & Book Logging: Registration began on
Tuesday, May 17 and logging will begin on June 7.

Bridges Cemetery Open House: The Local Ilistory Committee's Memorial Day open
house at Bridges Cemetery had to be canceled due to the impact of the severe weather
on the cemetery grounds.
National Audiobook Month: TCPI. will celebrate National Audiobook Month in June
by offering customers who check out or download audiobooks the opportunity to enter a
drawing for a free MP3 player.
Summer Reading Club Programs: Summer Reading Programs begin June 8; the
Board was provided information regarding the extensive program line-up for TCPI.'s
summer youth and family programs.
Fired Up About Reading: Thursdays, at 2 p.m., local firefighters will come and read to
elementary aged children. Participants can enter a drawing to ride in a firetruck on their
first day of school!
Robotics Camp: Two sessions will be offered: the first is June 17 and 24; the second is
July 13 and 22; each day the camp will run from 2-4 p.m. Participants must register due
to limited space and equipment. Participants will learn to program and build with
I EGO WeDo Robotics kits.
Teen Art Contest: On Saturday, June 11 from 1-3 p.m., contestants will create a piece
to submit for judging. Supplies will be provided. The submissions will be posted in the
Teen Room and the public may cast votes for their favorites. There will be a prize for
the winning artist.
Button Making for Teens: On Thursday, June 23 from 1-3 p.m., teens are invited to
participate in a button making extravaganza. Supplies will be provided.
Family LEGOmania: Ages 4 and up are invited to come and build with LEGO's on
Saturday June 25 and Saturday July 23 from 2-3:30 p.m. Creations will be displayed in
the Library.
3.6 Review list of June library programs
The board reviewed the list.
ADJOURNMENT
And with no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 8:43 p.m.
