HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/31/2016 LIBMarch 31, 2016 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES March 31, 2016 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on the 31 st day of March 2016, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin, Vice -Chair Place 2 Present Frederick Rushing Place 3 Absent Judith I iebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo, Chair Place 7 Absent Brian Wade Council Liaison Absent Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present With five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input — College students Mark Eisenmann and Emily Williams were present to observe the meeting to receive credit in their college courses. 2.0 1 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held March 3, 2016 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with corrections- Krueger; second by Hebb; motion passed with all ayes [_3_0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Tour of various areas of the Library to gain greater understanding of current services, improvements, planned changes, and needs. Director Sveinsson directed the Board to the Assistive Technology Station area and eService Librarian, Cary Cox, gave a presentation on the functions of this station. 3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for 2016: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues No report. 1 March 31, 2016 B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community activities Member Gehrke assisted with the Magazine Swap. C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPI.'s services and resources Member Martin continues to work on a PowerPoint presentation, CD, and brochures to present to the business community. 3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: New FOTCPL book bags and Bag of Books Sale: This promotion continues to be effective; 22 "Bag of Books" have been sold this month. FOTCPL PRESENTS! Fancy Nancy Tea Party: Registration began on Tuesday (March 29) and only 12 tickets are now left for this event. The tea party will be held on Saturday, April 16 from 2-3 p.m. Registration fee is $5 per person, registration is limited. Participants are encouraged to come as Faaancy as they can! FOTCPL Annual Meeting: The meeting will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at Palio's Pizza Cafe, 4141 Main Street. Jazzed About The Library Benefit 2016: FOTCPL President Wayne Bullard is asking members to volunteer one hour per month in support of Friends' events; the current need is for members to sell Jazzed tickets in person at the library. Jazzed 2016 will be held on Saturday, August 13, at the Cascades Event Center. 3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: AARP Tax Help: From March 9 through March 30, AARP Foundation Tax help volunteers helped a total of 82 people prepare and submit their Federal tax returns. All appointments have been booked for the rest of the season; however, the volunteers are doing a wonderful job working walk-ins into the schedule. There were 10 walk-ins on March 30 and the volunteers were able to help all of them! TCPL will continue to host this valuable service on Wednesday evenings from 4-8 p.m. through April 13. Annual Magazine Swap: The 8t' Annual '.Magazine Swap was held on Saturday, March 5 and was a great success. Spring Break Robotics Camp: The Annual Spring Break Robotics Camp was held daily Tuesday through Friday of Spring Break Week from 2-4 p.m. Attendance for Tuesday was 12, 11 on Wednesday, 10 on Thursday and 9 on Friday. The Next Chapter Book Club: "There were no attendees in March other than the moderator. Early Dismissal Movie: The movie The Emperor's New Groove will be shown for all ages on Friday, April 1 at 2 p.m. Candy Bouquet Class: Six participants have registered for this adult class to be held on Friday, April 8. Participants will learn to make a Spring Candy Bouquet. National Library Week prize drawing: TCPL will celebrate National Library Week with drawings for FOTCPL book sale gift certificates. 2 March 31, 2016 Children's Art Contest "My Feelings are a Work of Art": TCPI, is serving as a drop off site for contest entries. -- 3.5 Receive and discuss staff report re: staffing changes Director Sveinsson presented an update of the staffing changes in the department that have occurred since January. The new Page is Shannon Ilart and the new part-time librarian is Loreen Henry. eServices Librarian Cary Cox is retiring today; the new eServices Librarian is Noelle Roseberry and her first day is April 19. The opening for the summer Circulation Clerk will be posted tomorrow. 3.6 Review list of April library programs The Board reviewed the list.
