CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
March 3, 2016
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:02 p.m. on the 3rd day of March 2016, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main
Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call:

Due to the absence of the Chair and Vice -Chair, Member Rushing called the meeting to
order and conducted the meeting. With four board members present a quorum was
established and the following items were addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND
PROCLAMATIONS:

2.0 1 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held January 28, 2016
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item- Gehrke; second by Kelly; motion
passed with all ayes
3.0 1 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS -�
3.1 Tour of various areas of the Library to gain greater understanding of current
services, improvements, planned changes, and needs.
Director Sveinsson gave a tour of the technical and support services workroom and
office; staff break room; youth services public areas, office, and work room; and the
Local History Corner.
3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for
2016:
A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues
No report.

B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at library, school, and community - -
activities
Member Hebb assisted TCPL staff in issuing cards and promoting TCPL services at
Stewart's Creek Elementary School's Science and Technology night.
C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's
services and resources
No report.
D. Review Collection Development Policy
This policy will be discussed later in the year upon completion of staff's review.
3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
Library Volunteer Reception and Recognition: The reception was held on February
16 at City Hall prior to the City Council meeting. The volunteers were recognized by
City Council and received their awards during the Council meeting. The James W.
Althaus Library Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Madelynn Lopez.
FOTCPL PRESENTS! Fancy Nancy Tea Party: Registration begins March 29. The
tea parry will be held on Saturday, April 16 from 2-3 p.m. Registration fee is $5 per
person, registration is limited. Participants are encouraged to come as Fancy as they can!
Jazzed About The Library Benefit 2016: This event is scheduled for the evening of
Saturday, August 13. -
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Computer Classes: The Internet & Computer Security class drew three participants.
The Intro to Word 2010, Intro to Excel 2010, Intermediate Word 2010, and Intermediate
Excel 2010 classes each had two participants. Equipment for the classes funded in part
by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services through a grant to the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission.
Candy Bouquet Class: Each of the ten participants took home a lovely Valentine candy
bouquet that they made in the January 29th Candy Bouquet class. The next class is
scheduled for April 6.
AARP Tax Help: From February 3 through March 2, AARP Foundation Tax Help
volunteers helped a total of 89 people prepare and submit their Federal tax returns.
TCPL will continue to host this valuable service on Wednesday evenings from 4-8 p.m.
through April 13.
CE Class for Daycare and Preschool teachers: Twenty-nine teachers attended the
"Baby Sign Language Basics In Early Childhood Communication" continuing education
class presented by Amy Anderson, CCC -SLP, Speech Language Pathologist, ECI of
North Central Texas. The participants earned two hours of CE credits.
Gaming Tournament: Sixteen attendees turned out for this event with twelve
contenders in the Teen Anime Club's Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. Kids and
teens of all ages participated and great fun was had by all.
Magazine Swap: The 8t" Annual Magazine Swap will be held Saturday, March 5.

Spring Break Robotics Camp: The Annual Spring Break Robotics Camp offers kids in
grades 3-5 the opportunity to learn about programming and building with LEGO WeDo
Robotics Kits. Space is limited; registration is required. The camp is held daily Tuesday
— - - - through Friday of Spring Break Week from 2-4 p.m.
3.5 Review list of March library programs
The Board reviewed the list.

And with no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
