HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/22/2015 LIBOctober 22, 2015 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES OCTOBER 22, 2015 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:06 p.m. on the 22nd day of October, 2015, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin, Vice -Chair Place 2 Present Frederick Rushing Place 3 Present Judith Hebb Place 4 Absent Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo, Chair Place 7 Present (7:35 p.m.) Brian Wade Council Liaison Present Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present And with six board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input 2.0 1 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held September 24, 2015 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item- Gehrke; second by Rushing; passed with all ayes 3.0 1 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress on the following Library Board goals and projects for 2015: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues No report. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at school and community activities No report. C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's services and resources No report. 1 October 22, 2015 3.2 Discussion of development of 2016-2020 Long Range Plan The Board reviewed the elements of the plan as revised in previous meetings and noted items from the brainstorming session to be included in the plan. Director Sveinsson will compile the results into a draft for consideration at the December 3, 2015 meeting. 3.3 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Reference Policy The Board reviewed the Reference Policy, discussed staff's proposed revisions, and adopted the revisions. Motion made by member Rushing; seconded by member Krueger; motion passed with all ayes 3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors: Approximately sixty people visited with the twenty-three local authors and illustrators participating in this year's event on Saturday, September 26. They enjoyed discussing the authors' writing process and seeing examples of authors' new works. Signed copies were available for purchase. FOTCPL officers greeted visitors, answered questions about the event, and funded refreshments for the authors and illustrators. [Chairman Agudelo arrived at 7:35 p.m.] FOTCPL PRESENTS! Jazzed About The Library 2015: Approximately ninety people attended the benefit held Saturday, September 26 at the Cascades Event Center. The Jazzed planning committee will meet to discuss "lessons learned" and adjustments to make in the planning of Jazzed 2016 3.5 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: Back to Hogwarts Bash: This event was a great success! Over ninety Hogwarts students of all ages enjoyed visiting the Diagon Alley shops, attending classes, and competing against other Houses in the Harry Potter Trivia Contest. Many volunteers and staff members worked together to create this very special event. Computer Classes: On Saturday, October 17, there were four participants for the Computer Basics class and three participants for the Internet & Securities class. Classes for Word 2010 Basics and Excel 2010 Basics will be held on October 31. Twilight at Bridges Cemetery: This event is for all ages and will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 4-7 pm. Participants can explore Bridges Cemetery at sunset, enjoy fall refreshments, and hear a ghostly presentation by Red River Historian, Robin Cole Jett. There will also be a pumpkin carving contest. In case of rain, this event will be held at the Library in the multipurpose room. Booktoberfest: This Family Reading Festival is a partnership event sponsored by TCPL and The Colony Resource Center; it will be held on Sunday, October 25 from 2-4 p.m. The festival will feature readings and signings by local authors of children's and youth books, puppet shows, and door prizes. Courtesy of FOTCPL, each participant will receive a free book or, if a participant does not find a book to meet his or her interest in the selection provided, a voucher for a book from FOTCPL's ongoing book sale will be given. 2 October 22, 2015 Nebraska Furniture Mart event: Nebraska Furniture Mart is sponsoring a book drive October 7-27 in partnership with TCPL. On October 23, TCPL will provide a book reading event from 4-7 p.m. in the store. Salute to American Heroes 11/7: TCPL will have a booth in the Vendors Expo. Several Board members signed up to assist at the booth. Gaming Tournament: TCPL's Teen Anime Club will host this event on Saturday, November 14; doors open at 6 p.m. There is a $3 entry fee; proceeds to benefit TCPL's teen programs and activities. This event is sponsored by FOTCPL. 3D Design Class: On Sunday, November 22, in classes at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., participants can learn the basics of 3D design using the free online program Tinkercad. They will be able to print their design on TCPL's 3D printer and see the results. The classes are designed for Grades 3 and up.
