HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/24/2015 LIB September 24,2015 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES SEPTEMBER 24,2015 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:01 p.m. on the 24th day of September, 2015, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin,Vice-Chair Place 2 Present Frederick Rushing Place 3 Present Judith Hebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo, Chair Place 7 Present Brian Wade Council Liaison Absent Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present And with seven board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held August 27,2015 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item- Gehrke; second by Rushing; passed with all ayes 3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress on the following Library Board goals and projects for 2015: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues The Board members received information via email regarding legislation impacting federal funding for school libraries. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at school and community activities Chair Aguledo and members Hebb and Gehrke distributed flyers in the community to promote the September 26 Jazzed About The Library 2015 benefit. 1 September 24,2015 C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's services and resources Chair Aguledo emailed the Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce with information about ticket availability for Jazzed About The Library and to inquire about partnering with TCPL for future events. Member Gehrke delivered TCPL brochures to her church to be included in newcomers' packets. 3.2 Discussion of development of 2015-2020 Long Range Plan The Board continued discussion of the ideas from the August brain-storming session to further develop concepts for the plan. 3.3 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Conduct In The Library Policy The Board reviewed the Conduct in The Library Policy, discussed staff's proposed revisions, and adopted the revisions. Motion made by member Martin; seconded by member Krueger; motion passed with all ayes 3.4 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Posting of Public Notices Policy The Board reviewed the Posting of Public Notices Policy, discussed staff's proposed revisions, and adopted the revisions. Motion made by member Gehrke; seconded by member Martin; motion passed with all ayes 3.5 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors: Twenty-four authors have signed up to participate at this event on Saturday, September 26 from 1-4 p.m. Jazzed About The Library 2015: This benefit will be held Saturday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cascades Event Center. 3.6 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: Music & Movement Story Times: Music & Movement Story Time encourages kids to sing, dance, play instruments and have fun while at the same time affirming the importance of reading to growing minds! The first Music & Movement Story Time brought in twenty-one children and parents; by last week, participation had grown to thirty-one children and parents! Each week the children seem to be getting more comfortable with the idea that they are allowed to make noise and have fun! MineCraft Party: This popular event drew 166 attendees! According to staff, everyone had a wonderful time and kept talking about how fun and awesome it was. Staff mixed things up slightly from last year to include some new activities such as mini-golf and trivia. The children were super competitive and excited over the prizes this year and couldn't wait to see who won what! Continuing Education Class for Daycare Teachers: There were twenty-five attendees for this class on "Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect". The class was flim-:td by S1'c li Cotton, Community Outreach Coordinator, Denton County 2 September 24,2015 and Detective Chris Vaughn from TCPD. The turn-out was lower than expected for this topic; there were four registrants who did not show up and thus forfeited their $5 registration fee. Health in Retirement Seminar: Six participants came to learn from the two presenters. Back to Hogwarts Bash: This event is "sold out"; all ninety tickets were claimed in four days, which is a new record! Staff is working diligently to get everything organized for the classes; this year new activities and decorations have been added. Chair Agudelo and Members Martin and Gehrke volunteered to assist with the event. Booktoberfest: This Family Reading Festival is a partnership event sponsored by TCPL and The Colony Resource Center; it will be held on Sunday, October 25 from 2-4 p.m. The festival features readings and signings by local authors of children's and youth books, puppet shows, and door prizes. Courtesy of FOTCPL, each participant will receive a free book or, if a participant does not find a book to meet his or her interest in the selection provided, a voucher for a book from FOTCPL's ongoing book sale will be given. Nebraska Furniture Mart event: Nebraska Furniture Mart is sponsoring an October book drive in partnership with TCPL. On October 23, TCPL will provide a book reading event from 4-7 p.m. in the store. 3.7 Review list of October library programs The Board reviewed the list.
