HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/27/2015 LIB August 27,2015 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 27,2015 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:08 p.m. on the 27th day of August, 2015, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin, Vice-Chair Place 2 Absent Frederick Rushing Place 3 Present Judith Hebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo, Chair Place 7 Present Brian Wade Council Liaison Absent Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Absent And with five board members present a quorum was established with Member Rushing presiding until the arrival of Chair Agudelo and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS,RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input — This announcement was made later in the meeting: Yasmin Agudelo announced that she is running for City Council Place 1. 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held July 23,2015 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with corrections-Hebb; second by Kelly;passed with all ayes 3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress on the following Library Board goals and projects for 2015: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues No report. B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at school and community activities Member Rushing helped set up at the Back 2 School Bash and Member Hebb helped during the event; 490 folders were given to students, 980 contacts were made, and twenty-one library cards were issued. Member Hebb assisted Youth Services Librarian Kansas Terry during the Ethridge Open House; they issued thirty-five cards. 1 August 27,2015 At this point, Chair Agudelo arrived and Member Rushing turned the meeting over to her. C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's services and resources Member Kelly reported that she put information about the Library on her Facebook page. Chair Agudelo reported that she is serving as a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador; she also reported that FOTCPL now has a five-year Chamber membership. 3.2 Receive report on A Strong Foundation: Library Master Planning from Campus or Community Vision to Broad-Based Support(Hebb) Member Hebb gave a presentation summarizing the information presented in the webinar. 3.3 Discussion of development of 2015-2020 Long Range Plan The Board will continue discussion of the ideas from last month's brain-storming session at the September meeting to further develop concepts for the 2015-2020 Long Range Plan. 3.4 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Internet Access Policy The Board reviewed the Internet Access Policy, discussed staff's proposed revisions, and adopted the revisions. Motion made by member Gehrke; seconded by member Rushing; motion passed with all ayes 3.5 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Circulation Policy The Board reviewed the Circulation Policy, discussed staff's proposed revisions, and adopted the revisions. Motion made by member Hebb; seconded by member Rushing; motion passed with all ayes 3.6 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors will be held 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, at the Library; Member Hebb volunteered to assist with this event. Jazzed About The Library will be held 5:30-10:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, at the Cascades Event Center. Tickets are available for purchase at thecolonypl.org. Member Hebb volunteered to help with this event. 3.7 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: Summer Reading Programs On July 29, twenty-seven children attended a presentation by ventriloquist Nancy Burks Worcester; Member Gehrke observed the program and commented on the high quality of the presentation. 2 August 27,2015 Fired Up About Reading drew seventeen children at the final program on July 30; all three drawing winners are students at Camey Elementary School. End of Summer Story Time: Thirty-five children and parents attended the puppet show presented by Miss Kansas and special guest Mr. Eric. Super Hero Training Camp drew 173 participants on August 8. The event received front-page coverage in The Colony-Courier Leader and a large number of photographs from the event are posted on the newspaper's website. Robotics Club: Two sessions were held this month; the August 6 session had ten participants and the August 13 had eight. Teen Anime Club Karaoke Night: Seventeen teens attended and had a great time at this event. Music & Movement Story Times: This new early literacy series will be held Thursdays from 10:15-10:35 a.m. in the Library Multipurpose Room beginning September 3. This musically driven story time is for all ages. MineCraft Party: The second annual MineCraft Party will be held Saturday, September 12 from 2-4p.m. All ages are welcome to come and celebrate everything MineCraft with crafts and games in the Library Multipurpose Room. Computer Training Classes: Registration begins October 1 for the October classes, which are Computer Basics; Internet&Security; Intro to Word 2010; and Intro to Excel 2010. These small classes are designed for individualized attention. 3.8 Review list of September library programs The Board reviewed the list.
