HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/23/2015 LIB July 23,2015 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES JULY 23, 2015 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:04 p.m. on the 23rd day of July, 2015, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin Place 2 Present Frederick Rushing, Chair Place 3 Absent Judith Hebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger, Vice-Chair Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Present Yasmin Agudelo Place 7 Present Brian Wade Council Liaison Present Joan L. Sveinsson Staff Liaison Present Jan Williams Recording Secretary Present And with six board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input-None 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held June 25, 2015 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item- Hebb; second by Martin;passed with all ayes. 3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Election of presiding officers for new term (July 2015-June 2016) Gehrke nominated Agudelo for Chair and Martin for Vice-Chair, seconded by Hebb; nominations unanimously approved. 3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress on the following Library Board goals and projects for 2015: A. Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues No report. 1 July 23,2015 B. Continue to assist in representing TCPL at school and community activities Member Agudelo attended a Chamber of Commerce event and is assisting in the planning of the FOTCPL event Jazzed About The Library to be held on September 26 at the Cascades Event Center. C. Initiate contact and work with the business community to introduce TCPL's services and resources Member Martin is developing a list of business to contact regarding TCPL. 3.3 Discussion of development of 2015-2020 Long Range Plan The Board participated in a brain-storming session to further develop concepts for the 2015-2020 Long Range Plan. 3.4 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Policy on Patron Confidentiality Motion to approve proposed revisions-Aguledo; second by Kelly;passed with all ayes. 3.5 Discussion and consideration of proposed revisions to the Conference Room Policy Motion to approve proposed revisions-Martin; second by Hebb;passed with all ayes. 3.6 Review of Internet Access Policy The Board reviewed the policy. 3.7 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: June Bag of Books Sale-This promotion was a success. FOTCPL PRESENTS! Family Fun Night- On Thursday, July 16, thirty-two children and parents enjoyed the musical antics of the Pipdillys. September 26 fundraising event- The Board received more details about FOTCPL's fundraising event, Jazzed About The Library, to be held on the evening of Saturday, September 26, at 5:30 p.m. at the Cascades Event Center. Member Krueger volunteered to assist with set up for the event. 3.8 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: Lost in the Lake: This annual promotion offers a free donated book to TCPL visitors to take for their summer enjoyment without need to return it, easing their concerns regarding risk of loss or damage while traveling or relaxing at the lake or pool. This summer, children's books were also offered. Summer Reading Programs On July 8,thirty-eight children attended presentation by the Pipdilly's. 2 July 23,2015 On July 15, thirty-eight children attended the presentation by magician, puppeteer, & ventriloquist Brett Roberts. On July 22, twenty-eight children attended the presentation by ventriloquist/artist Captain Cartoon. Fired Up About Reading drew twelve children on July 2, nine on July 9, ten on July 16, and sixteen on July 23. Robotics Club (for Grades 3-5) had eleven participants on July 9 and nine participants on July 23. Sun Safety Presentation for preschoolers and their parents by Kamilah Hasan of the Denton County Health Department drew six attendees. Longfellow's Whales Tales was presented by The Colony Aquatic Park Manager Elise Knox who provided water safety information to an audience of six. The two safety events drew a pair of Girl Scouts who filmed, took notes, and interviewed the speakers in preparation for developing their own safety presentation to give at youth centers. Next Chapter Book Club, while still being offered, is not getting participation. Family LEGOmania will be held Saturday, July 25 from 2-3:30 for ages 4 and up.
