HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/29/2011 KTCBMINUTES CITY OF THE COLONY KEEP THE COLONY BEAUTIFUL BOARD SEPTEMBER 29, 2011 After determining that a quorum was present, the Keep The Colony Beautiful Board of the City of The Colony, Texas convened into a regular session which was held on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall, 6800 Main Street, The Colony, Texas, at which time the following items were addressed: Board Members Present: Linda Van Vranken, Ruby Lawrence, Alan Ladd, Peggy Chenault and Curtis Hatherly. Board Members Absent: Joe Zacha and Richard Kuether. Present from staff. Iris Browder, Joe Perez, Terry Gilman, David Swain and Ron Hartline. 1.0 1 CALL MEETING TO ORDER Chairman Van Vranken called the meeting to order at 6:36 p.m. 2.0 1 CITIZEN INPUT No citizen input. Chairman Van Vranken introduced the two new board members, Peggy Chenault and Curtis Hatherly. 3.0 1 MINUTES A motion was made by board member Lawrence to approve the minutes as written. Motion was seconded by board member Ladd. (3-0) 4.0 1 DISCUSSION 4.1 Receive a presentation on the major rivers water education program. (Engineering) Mr. Hartline provided the board with a brief overview of the major rivers water education program currently being taught in Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) 5"' & 6a' grade classes. He stated that the Engineering Department teamed up with LISD about 3 years ago and has been providing training materials to teachers as a way to educate future generation about storm water, how water affects our world and is being used by cities, how to use water effectively and the importance of water conservation. Mr. Hartline stated that the city spends about $1,000 for the training material and that approximately 3,900 students are benefiting from the program each year. 4.2 Receive an update on the upcoming fall cleanup. (Terry Gilman) Mr. Gilman provided the board with an overview of the upcoming fall cleanup which will be held on October 29a'. He passed out reusable bags to the board members that will be handed out at the cleanup and stated that information on the cleanup will be placed in the newspaper, on marquis signs, facebook, twitter and the city email blast to inform the residents about the cleanup. The city is expecting between 400 — 500 residents and will be accepting bulk items, electronics, appliances, tree limbs, brush and provide document shredding. Mr. Gilman informed the board that part of the sale of the recycleables collected at the cleanup will be rebated on their water bills as a deduction. The rebate can range anywhere from $1.10 to $1.15 a month. 4.3 Receive a report on the outcome of Arbor Days. (Parks) Mr. Swain provided the board with an overview of Arbor Days, which is held on the last Friday in April. Each year the city hosts the event in conjunction with one of the local elementary schools. This is the 4th year the city has participated in the event and each year the Mayor signs a proclamation recognizing Arbor Days, which is read to the students. In addition, the students are informed about the Tree City USA award which the city applies for and tries to maintain each year and the Tree North Texas Urban Forestry Initiative, which the north Texas region has started to plant 3 million trees in the next 10 years. This year the city coordinated the event with Camey Elementary, their head science teacher and the 5th grade students. The event consisted of an hour and a half presentation on trees, parts of a tree, how to identify trees, types and varieties of trees and why trees are important. After the presentation each group of students participate in the following: planting a tree, craft area, tree identification center, tree discussion and sapling distribution center where each student can take one home and plant it in their yard. 4.4 Discuss the upcoming Make a Difference Day. (Community Image) Mr. Perez provided the board with an update on Make a Difference Day which will be held on October 22. Make a Difference Day (MADD) is a national day to promote volunteerism throughout the country. Mr. Perez explained that the scope of participation on this national day can be a wide range from a coat drive to a full scale cleanup and thought that the Community Image Department should participate since we have the Volunteer Assistance Program. Some of the things the city has in mind for this day are the following: help those property owners who have received violation notices and need assistance to correcting them, cleaning up the shoreline trail/parks and street cleanup. Mr. Perez directed the board to the website where our event is registered and those wishing to volunteer would be able to sign up on the website. He explained that the event will be announced at the next council meeting, on facebook, twitter, the Colony Courier and sent out through the cities email blast. 4.5 Discuss having a January 2012 work session. (Linda Van Vranken) Chairman Van Vranken discussed with the board their thoughts on conducting a work session in January 2012 right before the regularly scheduled KTCB meeting. The work session would give the board the opportunity to look at the 2012 events calendar and have a questions and answers segment for staff regarding the events. 2 Meeting adjourned at 7:30pm Linda Van anken, Chairman his Browder, Recording Secreta
