LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTJ
February 26, 2015
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7.06 p.m. on the 26th day of February-, 2015, at The Colony Public Library, 6800
Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call:

2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approval of minutes of Library, Board meeting held January 22, 2015

3.0 � REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Discussion and consideration of Library Board goals and projects for 20115
The Board discussed setting the following goals:
• conduct a complete review of all TCPL Policies
• work with staff to develop TCPL:s 2015-2020 Long Range Plan to be submitted for
City Council approval
• Continue to maintain legislative awareness of pertinent library issues
• Continue to assist in representing TCPL at school and community activities
• Initiate contact and work with the business community, to introduce TCPI:s sei vices
and resources

3.2 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
FOTCPL P)?ESENTS! 71h Annual Great Magazine Swap: The Swap will be held
Saturday. March 7. 10 a.m.--4p.m. This event hosted by FOT CPL provides an
opportunity for people to dispose of magazines that might otherwise end up in the
landfill by making them available to others who might be interested in them.. At 4 p.m,,
any magazines that have not found a new home will be placed in recycling bins.
Fundraising plans: Progress is being made on the Jackson -Shaw fundraising challenge
to raise a total of $13,000 needed to replace TCPL's early literacy computers with
updated, fully -supported equipment; in February, the theme "Love Your Library with
AWE" was used to promote the campaign. FOTCPL purchased two "spiral wishing
well" coin banks to encourage coin/cash donations-. one is in use in the Library and the
other travels with staff to off-site public relations events. TCPL will field a team in
Little Elm Friends of the Library's Trivia Contest; if the team wins. they will donate the
winnings to this fundraising campaign. To date, over $3,750 of the $6,500 has been
raised.
FOTCPL PRESE)VTS! Fancy Nancy Tea Party: Ticket sales begin March 24, 2015.
for the Fancy Nancy Tea Party to be held on April 18. from 2-3 p.m. Event participants
must be at least 4 years of age: children under age 9 must be accompanied by a ticketed
caregiver 12 years of age or older. Tickets are $5 per person. Participants mav come
dressed as,Faaanqj� as they like!
3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding 3D printing service:
Equipment issues halted the service while staff waited for a replacement extruder — and
then waited again when that one did not Nvork! Now on the 3rd extruder, the service
has resumed. Staff has learned a lot about troubleshooting this equipment; special
thanks go to Megan Charters for her efforts.
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Family LEGOmania: TCPUs monthly Family LEGOmania series continues to be
popular; the January event brought in 29 participants, which is almost three times as
many as had participated in past months. Parents and kids alike had an awesome time
building to their hearts' content and were proud and excited to have their work displayed
in the library"s display case.
Candy Bouquet Classes: Seven participants each took home a lovely candy bouquet
after the January Candy Bouquet class. Another class will be held on March 19.
AARP Tax Help: In February, AARP Foundation Tax Help volunteers helped 74
people in the community prepare and send in their Federal tax returns; TCPL will
continue to host this valuable service on Wednesday evenings from. 4-8 p.m. through
April 15.

Capture The Colony: Though the events were very well publicized, neither day drew
attendees. The Local History Committee made the most of the allotted time by
beginning to organize,, scan and digitize photos in the history collection.
Teen Anti -Valentine's Day Party: Se,,!en teens attended TCPL"s first Anti -Valentine's
Day Party; they had an ainazing time celebrating the -angsty, dark side of Valentine's
Day"!
Computer Training Classes: There were five participants in the Beginning Word 2010
class on February 13. Upcoming classes will be February 27: Intermediate Word 2010;
March 13: Computer Basics, and March 27: Internet & Computer Safety.
Toddler Sensory Play Dates: TNventy-four parents and toddlers attend Sensory Play
this month and it was a crazy, fun time had by all. Miss Kansas ended up looking like
Big Bird before all was said and done, but the kids immensely enjoyed it! The next Play
Date is on March 17.
Continuing Education class for daycare teachers: On February 19, twenty-three
teachers attended Healthy Habits: Your Guide to Germ & Infection Control presented by
Pediatric specialist Harry M. Stellman IV, M.D. and Kamilah Hasan, M.A.- Denton
County Health Department; participants earned two hours of CE credit.
Literacy Nights at Stewart's Creek and B.B. Owen Elementary Schools: The
Stewart's Creek Literacy Night was in the January report: on March 19, Kansas Terry
and Holly Martin will represent TCPL at Stewart's Creek's Science & Technology
Night. On February 19, Kansas and Holly represented TCPL at B.B. Owen Elementary
School"s Charlotte's Web -themed Literacy Night, where they signed up two new library
cards and. made contact with ninety-five people. One of the new cardholders was so
excited to try his new card, that he made his mom bring him into the library the next
day!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament: Twenty-five attendees turned out for the Teen
Anime Club's Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. Kids and teens of all ages
participated and great fun was had by all. The tournament fees and snacks sales will
greatly help send our Teen Anime Club members to AKON!
Spring Break Robotics Camp: This camp will be held Tuesday, . March. 13'h- Friday,
March 17th for grades 3 — 5. Registration is required- only 4 spaces remain!
Social Securit), Seminar; The Social Security Seminar that was canceled last month
has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 7-8 p.m., it is sponsored by Edward Jones
Representative Jerod iV. Irabolle and presented by Franklin Templeton Representative
Bryan Sullivan. No financial products will be sold. This informational seminar is
designed for adults age 55 and older.

3.5 Review list of March lib�ran, programs
The board reviewed the list. Councilman Wade suggested that staff consider alternative
times and/or days for the SciGirls Club meetings due to the difficulty for middle school
students to get to the library by 4:30 p.m. on a weekday and the conflicts with. other
community activities on Wednesday evenings.
And with no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 7:59 p.m.
