CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
December 4,2014
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:01 p.m. on the 4th day of December 2014, at The Colony Public Library, 6800
Main Street, The Colony, Texas, with the following roll call:

Joanna Krueger, Vice-Chair Place 5 Present
Jade Kelly Place 6 Present

And with six board members present a quorum was established and the following items
were addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS, RECOGNITIONS AND
PROCLAMATIONS:

2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held October 30, 2014
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with corrections--Martin; second by
Krueger; motion passed with all ayes.
3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects
for 2014:
A. Increase interaction with LISD schools in The Colony to inform school
personnel, parents and students of TCPL's resources and services
No report.
B. Continue Board presence at TCPL events and participation in TCPL public
relations activities
Members Gehrke, Krueger, and Martin assisted Director Sveinsson at the TCPL
booth at the Salute to American Heroes Event.
C. Work with new businesses to have TCPL presence at grand openings
No report.

D. Increase library legislative awareness
No report.
E. Library visits to gain insights for future planning for TCPL
No report.
F. Finalize development of a Speakers' Bureau to provide trained speakers to
local venues to provide information about TCPL's resources, services, and
future development
Member Kelly suggested that testing be done on formatting the PowerPoint
presentation to 5, 10 and 15 minutes.
3.2 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
FOTCPL PRESENTS!Photos with Santa (12/6, noon—2pm); fund-raising plans
Photos with Santa 12/6: This event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. The fee per
photo will be $2; photos will be available for same day pickup and a free photo
mailing card will be included. Holiday music will be provided by the Fiddle Rascals.
Proceeds will benefit the Library's Youth programs.
Fund raising plans: FOTCPL and Cascades developer Jackson-Shaw have entered
into a fund-raising challenge with the goal of replacing the Library's Early Literacy
Computers with updated, fully-supported equipment. Jackson-Shaw Foundation will
match every dollar raised by FOTCPL up to $6,500 to reach the $13,000 needed. The
partnership was announced at the October 30, 2014 groundbreaking for the new
Marriott Courtyard Hotel, when Lewis Shaw presented Jackson-Shaw's initial
donation of$1,000 towards their pledge to FOTCPL President Wayne Bullard. This
fundraising effort is being publicized via several venues, including an email blast to
the subscribers of the library events list, an announcement at the December 2nd City
Council meeting, an email blast to all FOTCPL members, posts on FOTCPL's
Facebook site and the Library's website, tweet to the City's Twitter followers, and
included in the November 24th City Manager's weekly report. The publicity
announcements include a list of ways to donate to the project: tax deductible
donations may be made at the Library via cash, check or credit card; or via check by
mail; or online at thecolonypl.org via PayPal. Other ways to support the project are by
shopping at FOTCPL's ongoing book sale and by making FOTCPL your preferred
charity when shopping smile.amazon.com. To date, approximately $2,700 has been
accrued towards this fund-raiser.
3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Teen Anime Pokémon Tournament 11/1: This event brought in 25 attendees;
$59.99 (gross revenue) was raised.
Booth at American Heroes: A Salute to Veteransll/8: TCPL staff, Board members
and FOTCPL members made 360 contacts, issued sixteen library cards to new
residents, shared information about TCPL resources and services with booth visitors,
and raised funds for library support through the sale of book bags,

Bridges Cemetery Open House 11/8: Members of the Library's Local History
Committee greeted 58 visitors at Bridges Cemetery on Saturday, November 8th. The
Committee opened the cemetery to honor the 14 Civil War veterans buried within and
to answer questions about the city's history. Several descendants of the Bridges
Family attended the event and the Front Porch Pickers from The Colony's Community
Center played music for the visitors. LHC received $81 in donations at this event.
Early Dismissal Movie (12/19 2pm): The movie Frozen will be shown for all ages.
If under the age of 9, the must be accompanied by caregiver age 12 and up.
3.4 Review list of December library programs
The Board reviewed the list.
And with no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 7:32 p.m.
