CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
September 25,2014
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:00 p.m. on the 25th day of September 2014, at The Colony Public Library, 6800
Main Street,The Colony,Texas,with the following roll call:

And with seven board members present a quorum was established and the following items
were addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS,RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS:
Call to order

2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approval of minutes of Library Board meeting held August 28,2014 with
changes
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with grammar corrections--Krueger;
second by Hebb;motion passed with all ayes.
3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for
2014:
A. Increase interaction with LISD schools in The Colony to inform school
personnel,parents and students of TCPL's resources and services
No report.
B. Continue Board presence at TCPL events and participation in TCPL public
relations activities
Members Gehrke and Martin reported that they participated in the "Meet the
Authors and Illustrators" event; Member Hebb reported that she observed at the
September Read to Rover event and at one of the bilingual story times.
C. Work with new businesses to have TCPL presence at grand openings
No report.
D. Increase library legislative awareness
No report.

E. Library visits to gain insights for future planning for TCPL
No report.
F. Finalize development of a Speakers' Bureau to provide trained speakers to
local venues to provide information about TCPL's resources, services, and
future development
Member Kelly stated that this project is still in progress.
3.2 Discussion and consideration of proposed fees for color printing and 3D printing.
Director Sveinsson reported that staff proposes a fee of 401$ per page for color
printing and for 3D printing 10(t per gram with a minimum of$1 per print job.
Motion to accept the proposed fees-Gehrke;second by Martin;motion passed with all ayes.
3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors and Illustrators (9/13/14 1-5 p.m.):
Approximately 70 people visited with the 25 local authors and illustrators (record
number!) participating in this year's event on Saturday, September 13. They enjoyed
discussing the authors' writing process and seeing examples of authors' new works.
Signed copies were available for purchase. FOTCPL officers greeted visitors,
answered questions about the event, and funded refreshments for the authors and
illustrators.
Fall membership meeting and local history tours (10/25/14): The Colony has a rich
historical legacy dating back to the 1840s. This is an opportunity to explore the past
and learn more about the community on a guided tour with The Colony Public
Library Local History Committee. Included in the visits are Bridges Cemetery, the
Central Fire Station and the Victorian-era Spencer House in Austin Ranch. Tours
depart from The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street. Ticketed event: $10 /
person. Tickets may be purchased in advance beginning September 30 at the Library
Circulation Desk (cash,checks made payable to FOTCPL,credit/debit card). Space is
limited.
FOTCPL PRESENTS! The Secret Lives of Ghosts: Fact & Fiction, Saturday,
October 25, noon — 2 p.m.: Between the history tours, FOTCPL will host a light
lunch and presentations by two local authors. Jacqueline Smith, author of Cemetery
Tours and Between Worlds, will kick off the event, followed by Red River Historian
and author Robin Cole Jett, who will tell about the Ghostly Towns of the Red River
Valley. This event is open to all. A brief business meeting will precede the
presentations.
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Toddler Sensory Play Dates: Upcoming Sensory Play Dates: Tuesday, September
30 and Tuesday, October 28 at 10:15 a.m. Jan Williams donated a vacuum cleaner to
help with the clean-up of this event.
Lakeview Middle School Open House 9/9: YSL Kansas Terry provided
approximately 40 parents and students with information about the various programs
and services offered by TCPL-- highlighting the upcoming Minecraft and Back to
Hogwarts events. She also issued 9 library cards.

Recycled Book Crafts: Participants learned different ways to reuse worn out books
in making fun crafts. Books were recycled to make envelopes, sculptural
decorations, greeting cards, and origami. Participants were able to take home
materials and instructions for even more crafts to continue the creative process in
repurposing old books.
Continuing Education Class for Daycare Teachers: The "Active Shooter Training:
learn how to protect yourself and the children in your care" was presented by The
Colony Police Department Community Resource Officer Keli Hunt. 45 Participants
earned 2 hours of CE credit as they learned to protect themselves and the children in
their care.
"The Next Chapter" Book Club: At the September 24 meeting, four participants
had the opportunity to visit in a phone conversation with Maddie Dawson, author of
The Opposite of Maybe. eServices Librarian Cary Cox had reviewed the book on
TCPL's Book Talk blog, which caught the author's attention and she contacted Cary
to set up the call! This club will meet monthly at 7 pm on the following Wednesdays
to discuss the listed books: October 22: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes; November 19:
Defending Jacob by William Landay; December 17: Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by
Anna Quindlen.
Family LEGOmania: The library is opening up LEGOmania to the whole family.
Families are invited to participate as a team to build LEGO structures at these
monthly come and go events. The LEGO creations will go on display in the library
until next month's program. Ages 4 and up welcome,but children under the age of 9
must be accompanied by a caregiver age 12 or older at all times. This one-hour
program series starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday,September 27.
Teen Anime Club Fall Party: TCPL's Teen Anime Club will host this event on
Saturday,September 27 at 6 p.m. to encourage new members;attendees are invited to
participate in cosplay. The Anime Club's activities are sponsored by FOTCPL
Star Wars Reads Day: All ages are welcome to celebrate everything Star Wars from
1:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10. Activities will feature games, crafts, and Star
Wars giveaways.
Back to Hogwarts Bash: Participants are invited to experience the world of Harry
Potter on Saturday, October 18,from 6-9 p.m. right here at TCPL! They will be sorted
into Houses, take Hogwarts classes and participate in a Harry Potter trivia quiz.
Costumes encouraged! Registration is limited; free tickets will be available at
thecolonypl.org. Members Martin and Krueger volunteered to help with setting this
event up after 3 p.m. on the 18th.
3.5 Receive and discuss staff report regarding planned new services to be
implemented this fall
Color Printing: The printer has arrived; staff plans to locate it near the reservation
computer; it needs to be set up on network; and it needs to be set up in the print
management system.

3D Printing: The printer has arrived and staff is studying options regarding
placement. Staff training and the development of procedures will need to be
completed before initiating the service.
Computer Training Classes: The laptops have arrived and eServices Librarian Cary
Cox is configuring them. The classes will be held on Fridays, October 10-31, at 10
a.m.; topics are: 10/10 Computer basics; 10/17 Intro to Word; 10/24 Internet &
security;10/31 Intro to Excel. Registration for the classes is underway.
3.6 Review list of October library programs
The Board reviewed the list.
