HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/28/2014 LIB August 28,2014 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES August 28,2014 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on the 28th day of August 2014,at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street,The Colony,Texas,with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Absent Marlene Martin Place 2 Present Frederick Rushing,Chair Place 3 Present Judith Hebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger,Vice-Chair Place 5 Present Jade Kelly Place 6 Absent Margaret Heermans Place 7 Present • And with five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS,RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input-None 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approving minutes of Library board meeting held July 24,2014 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item- Martin; second by Krueger; motion passed with all ayes. 3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for 2014: A. Increase interaction with LISD schools in The Colony to inform school personnel,parents and students of TCPL's resources and services No report. B. Continue Board presence at TCPL events and participation in TCPL public relations activities Director Sveinsson read the report sent to her by Member Gehrke about the events she had attended: Fired Up About Reading (she noted that when the fireman involved the children in the story,they definitely became more interested in it); Que Pastas (the duo sang various songs that got the children involved and explained the instruments to them); and Back 2 School Bash (fun to see the eager students who are anxious to acquire all the free school supplies and fascinating to observe the parents' reactions). Member Rushing reported that he assisted with setting up TCPL's Back 2 School Bash booth. C. Work with new businesses to have TCPL presence at grand openings Member Krueger reported that she has requested updates from the Chamber of Commerce. 1 August 28,2014 D. Increase library legislative awareness No report. E. Library visits to gain insights for future planning for TCPL No report. F. Finalize development of a Speakers' Bureau to provide trained speakers to local venues to provide information about TCPL's resources, services, and future development No report. 3.2 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: FOTCPL PRESENTS! Meet the Authors and Illustrators (9/13/14 1-5 p.m.) The Friends host this annual event which will feature book signings and discussions with local authors;a record number of authors will be participating in this year's event. Fall membership meeting and local history tours (10/25/14) The Friends and TCPL's Local History Committee are planning two history tours (similar to those offered during TCPL's 30th Anniversary Celebration) to be conducted on Saturday, 10-25-14. The current plan is to conduct one tour in the morning, followed by the FOTCPL fall membership meeting and program. The Friends plan to ask Red River Historian Robin Cole Jett to give her presentation on Ghost Towns. The second tour will be in the afternoon. Publicity is being held until verification that there is a driver available for the bus and a response from Robin Cole Jett. Spencer House will be a stop on the tours, with Wayne Bullard as host/guide at that location. Austin Ranch is providing free access to Spencer House. 3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs Fired Up About Reading winners: Fired Up About Reading winners experienced the opportunity to ride to school on a fire truck;photos of their arrival at their schools were shared with the Board. Toddler Sensory Play Dates: The first Sensory Play Date was a huge success. Youth Services Library Assistant Tina Martinez and Youth Services Librarian Kansas Terry hosted over 30 toddlers and parents. The next Sensory Play Date is scheduled for September 30 at 10:15 a.m. End of Summer youth events (Story Time;1st-5th Grade Party;Teen Party) Story Time: Laughter rang out in the Story Corner as 35 children and parents enjoyed the antics of Miss Julie,Miss Linda, and The Three Little Fishies. 1st-5th Grade Party: The Library hosted 45 children and parents at this come-and-go event featuring crafts and activity stations. Most popular were the custom-made paper airplanes with a simulated runway, as well as the binary-code beaded necklace creations. Other stations included: Guestimate jars of beans, candies and pennies; coloring worksheets;and sink or float show and tell. Teen Party: Teens made steampunk crafts, participated in a dystopian novel trivia contest, and enjoyed an ice cream sundae bar. Teens who had submitted reviews of books they read during the summer qualified for the Teen Prize Pack drawing. The winners were announced at the party. TCPL Swim Day at Hawaiian Falls: Hawaiian Falls offered this opportunity to the library; TCPL staff, FOTCPL members, and volunteers provided information to 2 August 28,2014 visitors at the TCPL Swim Day held at Hawaiian Falls. Due to the fact that the promotional materials were paper and the visitors were mostly children in wet swimsuits,it was not an ideal mix for TCPL promotion. Back 2 School Bash booth: The TCPL team distributed information packets to 448 children, promoted and provided information about TCPL resources and services, and issued 29 library cards. Including parents and siblings, approximately 598 contacts were made. Presentation to Lakeview Middle School teachers: Youth Services Librarian, Kansas Terry, presented information regarding TCPL resources and programming to an audience of 80 teachers and staff. Information presented included TCPL's new programs: SciGirls; Graphic Novel Book Club; Mine Craft Party;useful resources for middle school students; and electronic resources useful for teachers. She provided each teacher with a packet containing information on all of TCPL's electronic resources that are relevant to them as well as their,students and provided the school librarian with database brochures for the students. Kansas has been invited back for the school's Open House next month. Bilingual Story Time Series: This program series is being moved to Saturdays at 10:15 a.m. starting September 6, an attempt to attract more participants. Bilingual Spanish/English Story Time backpacks will be released this fall. This Story Time is funded in part by a grant from Target and local funds from FOTCPL. Graphic Novel Book Club for Tweens and Teens: This club will feature discussion of graphic novels and comic books; graphic novels will be provided for those who need ideas. This club will meet at 4:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month from September to December. SciGirls Club: Girls in grades 5-8 are invited to create, design, and investigate during TCPL's all new SciGirls Club monthly meetings. They can delve into fun experiments; September's event involves CSI work...and glitter! This club will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.from September to December to have fun with STEM enriched activities. Online Resources for Students Workshop 9/6: Participants will learn about research and homework help available for K-12 at 11 a.m. in the Library Mutipurpose Room. This event is for students,parents and homeschool instructors. Recycled Book Crafts 9/20: This come and go event will run from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Library Multipurpose Room. Participants will learn to upcycle old books to create unique items and decorations. The library will provide the books, some supplies, and space. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by a supervising adult. Continuing Education Class for Daycare Teachers 9/18: Registration begins September 2; the $5 registration fee is refundable upon completion of the class. The "Active Shooter Training: learn how to protect yourself and the children in your care" will be presented by The Colony Police Department Community Resource Officer Keli Hunt. Participating teachers can earn 2 hours of CE credit. "The Next Chapter" Book Club will meet monthly at 7 pm on the following Wednesdays to discuss the listed books. September 24: The Opposite of Maybe by Maddie Dawson; October 22: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes; November 19: Defending Jacob by William Landay; December 17: Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen. 3 August 28,2014 Family LEGOmania: The library is opening up LEGOmania to the whole family. Families are invited to participate as a team to build LEGO structures at these monthly come and go events. The LEGO creations will go on display in the library until next month's program. Ages 4 and up welcome,but children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by a caregiver age 12 or older at all times. This one-hour program series starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday,September 27. Teen Anime Club Fall Party: TCPL's Teen Anime Club will host this event on Saturday,September 27 at 6 p.m. to encourage new members; attendees are invited to participate in cosplay. The Anime Club's activities are sponsored by FOTCPL. Star Wars Reads Day: All ages are welcome to celebrate everything Star Wars from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10. Activities will feature games, crafts, and Star Wars giveaways. Back to Hogwarts Bash: Participants are invited to experience the world of Harry Potter on Saturday, October 18,from 6-9 p.m. right here at TCPL! They will be sorted into Houses, take Hogwarts classes and participate in a Harry Potter trivia quiz. Costumes encouraged! Registration is limited; free tickets will be available at thecolonypl.org. 3.4 Receive and discuss staff report regarding planned new services to be implemented this fall: color printing;3D printing;computer training classes Director Sveinsson outlined the developing plans for the initiation of these new services. Both a color laser printer and a 3D printer have been acquired using funds donated by Marine Quest. The board viewed parts of a presentation on the uses of 3D printers in general and in public libraries in specific. Six laptop computers were acquired with federal funding granted to TCPL through a Texas State Library and Archives Commission reimbursement program, enabling TCPL to address one of its Edge Assessment implementation goals: offering computer training classes for the public. 3.5 Review list of September library programs The Board reviewed the list.
