HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/24/2014 LIB July 24,2014 CITY OF THE COLONY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES July 24,2014 The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on the 24th day of July 2014, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main Street,The Colony,Texas,with the following roll call: Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present Marlene Martin Place 2 Present Frederick Rushing,Chair Place 3 Present Judith Hebb Place 4 Present Joanna Krueger,Vice-Chair Place 5 Absent Jade Kelly Place 6 Absent Margaret Heermans Place 7 Present And with five board members present a quorum was established and the following items were addressed: 1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS,RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS: Call to order Citizen Input-None Introduction of Youth Services Librarian-Youth Services Librarian Kansas Terry was introduced to the members of the Board. 2.0 CONSENT AGENDA Consider approving minutes of Library board meeting held June 24,2014 Motion to approve the above consent agenda item-Martin;second by Heermans; motion passed with all ayes. 3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS 3.1 Election of presiding officers for new term (July 2014-June 2015) Motion to retain officers from previous term-Fred Rushing, Chair and Joanna Krueger, Vice- Chair; Gehrke;second by Martin;motion passed with all ayes 3.2 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for 2014: A. Increase interaction with LISD schools in The Colony to inform school personnel,parents and students of TCPL's resources and services No report. B. Continue Board presence at TCPL events and participation in TCPL public relations activities Member Rushing presented a positive impression of the Summer Reading Club event presented by Zooniversity on July 9,2014. 1 July 24,2014 C. Work with new businesses to have TCPL presence at grand openings No report. D. Increase library legislative awareness No report. E. Library visits to gain insights for future planning for TCPL Member Hebb gave a PowerPoint presentation on the Frisco Public Library. F. Finalize development of a Speakers' Bureau to provide trained speakers to local venues to provide information about TCPL's resources, services, and future development No report. 3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities: "Bag of Books" sale; FOTCPL PRESENTS! "Reading is Magic" 7/17;Kroger Community Rewards August re-enrollment of FOTCPL supporters; AmazonSmile Foundation donation program "Bag of Books" sale: Thirty-four bags of books were sold; the next "Bag of Books" sale will be held in October. FOTCPL PRESENTS! "Reading is Magic" 7/17: Fifty-seven children and adults attended the second FOTCPL PRESENTS! Family Fun Night of the summer; this event featured magician Gerald Edmundson. Kroger Community Rewards August re-enrollment of FOTCPL supporters: Participants must re-enroll with their Kroger Plus Card anytime after August 1st to continue support for FOTCPL through this program. AmazonSmile Foundation donation program: Director Sveinsson provided information about this new program. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible AmazonSmile purchases to charitable organizations selected by Amazon customers when shopping at help://smile.amazon.com . FOTCPL is now registered in this donation program. 3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs: Lost in the Lake; Bridges Cemetery Open House event 7/4; Summer youth programs, including Whale's Tales, K-2 Laboratory, Fired Up About Reading, LEGOmania, Robotics Club, Solar Powered Baking, Duct Tape Creations, and Toddler Sensory Play Date; TCPL Swim Day at Hawaiian Falls 8/6; Back 2 School Bash booth 8/19; rescheduling of Back to Hogwarts to 10/18; Star Wars Reads Day 10/10 Lost in the Lake: Through this promotion, TCPL visitors can select a free donated paperback to read while vacationing or visiting the Lake;to date, a goodly number of books have been selected by TCPL visitors. Bridges Cemetery Open House event 7/4: Despite the heat throughout the morning, over seventy people visited the cemetery on July 4th from 9 a.m. to noon. Local History Committee members were present to greet visitors,talk about the history of 2 July 24,2014 The Colony, and to place flags on Civil War veteran's graves. One history book was sold and$72 received in donations for the Local History Committee. The Committee will open the cemetery again on Saturday,November 8th from noon to 3p.m. Whale's Tales: Aquatic Park Manager Elise Knox presented water safety tips to preschoolers and their parents. K-2 Laboratory: Parents and their children conducted experiments and then explored outside to compile nature journals. Fired Up About Reading: Attendance at this weekly event has ranged from eleven to thirty-three; the average attendance is eighteen. Next week's final event will include a drawing for a ride to school on a fire truck. LEGOmania: Sixteen 3rd-5th graders participated in this month's Civil War themed event. Special guests Bill Longo and Dixie Irwin came dressed in period costume to greet the children. Participants learned about the Civil War and then built structures from the time period, including submarines, ironclad warships, plantation-style homes,and cannons. Robotics Club: This club was full with sixteen members. At the July 10th meeting, members made robots for a Sumo Robot Challenge. At the July 17th meeting, they created robots with gears and raced them against each other. A final celebration was held with refreshments, certificates were awarded and families were invited to attend. Twenty-seven family members attended. Members also received "robot pens" from UTD's Contact Science. Solar Powered Baking: Seven enthusiastic participants and two parents attended the Solar Baking presentation. Each participant made a solar oven out of pizza boxes and learned about solar energy. They also viewed the Library's new PowerKnowledge science resources and played a memory game. Due to the lack of sun and running out of time, the members did not get to try out their ovens but took them home to try on another sunnier day. Duct Tape Creations 6/28: Three creative participants made wallets from duct tape in this event. The next duct tape event will be held July 26th. Toddler Sensory Play Date 7/29: Toddlers and parents are invited to have fun exploring their senses through various squishy, feathery, and glittery activities during this hour long event. TCPL Swim Day at Hawaiian Falls 8/6: Hawaiian Falls is hosting a TCPL celebration day on Wednesday, August 6th, with TCPL staff and FOTCPL members on site at a pavilion to provide information about TCPL services and fall programs to park visitors. Back 2 School Bash booth 8/19: This event will take place at the Rec Center; TCPL will have a booth at which staff and volunteers will issue library cards and distribute information about services and resources for students, as well as about fall programs. Board members Rushing and Gehrke volunteered to help set up and work the booth. Rescheduling of Back to Hogwarts to 10/18: The Back to Hogwarts event has been rescheduled to the evening of October 18th. July 24,2014 Star Wars Reads Day 10/10: All ages will be welcome to come celebrate everything Star Wars from 3:30-5pm in the Library Multipurpose Room. There will be games, crafts,and Star Wars giveaways. 3.5 Receive and discuss staff update re: Edge Assessment results,recommends, action plan,and related TSLAC equipment grant The Board received a staff report regarding the results of TCPL's Edge Assessment regarding technology-related services, recommendations based on the results, and TCPL's action plan. As an outcome of the process, TCPL qualified for and has been awarded a reimbursement grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission which will enable TCPL to acquire six laptops to be used to provide computer classes for the public. 3.6 Receive and discuss staff report re: donation from Marine Quest Director Sveinsson informed the Board that Marine Quest has donated $5,000 to the Library, with a pledge to make a $5,000 donation in each of the next four years for a total of $25,000. This year's donation will enable TCPL to provide additional technology-related services: 3D printing, color printing, a charging station for customer use, and a large print keyboard to increase TCPL's assistive technology resources for those with vision limitations. The official public announcement of the donation and a presentation of the advancements it makes possible in the development of TCPL's services will be on the agenda for the August 19th City Council agenda. 3.7 Review list of August library programs The Board reviewed the list.
