CITY OF THE COLONY
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
June 24,2014
The Regular Session of the Library Board of the City of The Colony, Texas, was called to
order at 7:05 p.m. on the 24th day of June 2014, at The Colony Public Library, 6800 Main
Street,The Colony,Texas,with the following roll call:
Sandi Gehrke Place 1 Present
Marlene Martin Place 2 Present
Frederick Rushing,Chair Place 3 Present
Judith Hebb Place 4 Present
Joanna Krueger,Vice-Chair Place 5 Absent
Jade Kelly Place 6 Present
Margaret Heermans Place 7 Present
And with six board members present a quorum was established and the following items
were addressed:
1.0 ROUTINE ANNOUNCEMENTS,RECOGNITIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS:
Call to order
Citizen Input-None
2.0 CONSENT AGENDA
Consider approving minutes of Library board meeting held May 22,2014
Motion to approve the above consent agenda item with grammar and format corrections-
Gehrke;second by Martin;motion passed with all ayes.
3.0 REGULAR AGENDA ITEMS
3.1 Discussion and reports regarding progress of Library Board goals and projects for
2014:
A. Increase interaction with LISD schools in The Colony to inform school
personnel,parents, and students of TCPL's resources and services
No report.
B. Continue Board presence at TCPL events and participation in TCPL public
relations activities
No report.
B. Work with new businesses to have TCPL presence at grand openings
No report.
C. Increase library legislative awareness
No report.

D. Library visits to gain insights for future planning for TCPL
Member Hebb had a PowerPoint presentation of a library she visited; due to
technical problems with the projector, the Board was unable to view it. Plans are
to view this presentation at the July Board meeting.
E. Finalize development of a Speakers' Bureau to provide trained speakers to
local venues to provide information about TCPL's resources, services, and
future development
Member Kelly reported that she will have a packet for each member to review at
the July meeting.
3.2 Review and discuss staff update regarding upcoming Youth Services Librarian
vacancy.
Director Sveinsson reported that the second round interviews were complete and that
a selection for the top candidate would be made in the near future.
3.3 Receive and discuss staff update regarding Friends of the Library activities:
"Bag of Books" sale:
Throughout June (as long as supplies last), customers will be able to purchase a
FOTCPL book bag and fill it up with sale items from the specially marked sale
shelves for$4. As of 6/17,20 bags had been sold.
FOTCPL PRESENTS!Family Night 6/19:
A total of thirty-four children and parents attended Dr. Flake-N-Stein's Magic
Laboratory presentation sponsored by FOTCPL.
FOTCPL PRESENTS!Family Night 7/17:
Gerald Edmundson will present"Reading is Magic" at the July Family Night.
3.4 Receive and discuss staff update regarding public relations events and programs:
Read to Rover 6/10:
Six children attended this month's Read to Rover, strengthening their reading skills
by reading to the two Therapy Pal dogs.
Bridges Cemetery Open House 5/26 &7/4:
Despite the rainy weather throughout Memorial Day morning, over 90 people visited
the cemetery from 10 a.m. to noon. Local History Committee members Alyce Rufi,
Bill Longo,and Dixie Irwin dressed in period costume to greet visitors and talk about
the history of The Colony. Three history books were sold and an additional $54
received in donations. The Committee will open the cemetery again on the Fourth of
July from 9 a.m. to noon
"No Stress"Book Club"6/25&7/23:
The club meets at 7 p.m. Club coordinator Kim Volenik is seeking ideas for the
development of the club.

Early Dismissal Movie 6/6:
Twenty-two people attended this interactive showing of Frozen; this interactive
activity included making snowflakes to wave during the song "Let It Go" and
throwing Styrofoam snowballs at the bad guys. Popcorn was also enjoyed.
Summer Reading Club registration:
To date, a total of 304 people are registered for the Summer Reading Club: 65 Early
Literacy,156 Elementary,38 teens,and 45 adults.
Summer youth programs:
To date, total combined attendance in the youth programs has reach over 300.
Programs included:
K-2 Laboratory: Seventeen parents and children participated in the June event.
Fired Up About Reading: Sixteen attended on June 10;eleven attended on June 17;
and twenty-four attended on June 24.
Dr. Flake-N-Stein: Sixty-four children attended on June 11 and fifty-one children
from area daycare centers attended on June 13.
LEGOmania: Ten children participated on June 14.
Magician Gerald Edmundson: Eighty-one children attended on June 18 which is
the maximum capacity for our program space.
Sun Safety: Twenty-one preschool children and parents attended on June 18; this
presentation was held concurrently with the program for children in grades 1-5.
Robotics Club: Registration for this club is full; on June 19, all sixteen members
attended.
Snap Circuits Pro Tutorial: Twelve children participated on June 21.
3.5 Review list of July library programs
The Board reviewed the list.

And with no further business to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM
